What is Internet
 Internet is composed of hundreds of thousands of interconnected
networks.

 A network is a group of connected, communicating devices such as

computers and printers.
Historyz of Internet
ARPANET- the first Network

 ARPANET is a acronym for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

 Established by US Department of Defense [DOD] .

 DOD sponsored major research work for development of initial protocols, languages and frameworks for
network communications.

 Four nodes at:-

University of California at Los Angeles [UCLA].

Stanford Research Institute [SRI].

University of California at Santa Barbara [UCSB].

University of Utah

 On October 29,1969, the first message was exchanged between UCLA and SRI.

 It was created in such a way that the network can easily survive nuclear attacks by establishing multiple

 1972:- Birth of Internet

 Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, both of whom were part of

the core ARPANET group, collaborated on what they
called the Internetting Project.

 They wanted to link different objects together so that

host on one network could communicate with the host
of second different network.

 They developed Gateway to connect different networks.

 They developed TCP. It then splits into TCP and IP and

then called TCP/IP.

1970:- CSNET

 Another milestone in Internet history was the creation of CSNET in 1970.

 CSNET was a network sponsored by the National Science

Foundation[NSF].

 It was formed to overcome the issues related to ARPANET. For example,

earlier it was mandatory for a university to sign a contract with DOD to
use ARPANET.

 It gained a lot of popularity because it allowed dial up connections and by

1980’s, around 200 computers were connected through CSNET.

1986:-NSFNET

 Through continuous research and development in this field,

NSFNET came into existence.

 It had a higher capacity and greater speed than the CSNET.

 In 1990, it was officially retired and replaced by NSFNET.

1992:- ASFNET

 When NSFNET worked successfully and gained popularity, NSF

began to think about an improved version.

 This research led to the development of a new network called

ASFNET.

The Modern Network

 In 1995, all these networks were improved and named as the Internet.

 It is made up of many wide and local area networks joined by connecting devices
and switching stations.

 There are international service providers, national service providers and local service
providers.

 The internet today is run by the private companies, not the government and helps to
connect billions of devices all over the world.
