Earth is composed of 4
subsystems: geosphere,
hydrosphere, atmosphere,
and biosphere.

GEOSPHERE
- Refers to the solid earth. It is
composed of naturally-occurring
solid aggregate of minerals,
organic material or natural gas
called rocks. Geosphere also
includes geologic landforms
such as mountains and hills.

HYDROSPHERE
- Is the totality of earth’s water,
including the permanently
frozen parts called cryosphere.
Earth is the only planet in the
solar system that contains water
in all three phases: solid, liquid
and gas.

ATMOSPHERE
- Is the mixture of gases that
surrounds the planet such as
nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon
dioxide, and water vapor. The
air in the atmosphere is
generally composed of 78%
nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and
0.9% argon and etc.
BIOSPHERE
- includes all life forms, even
organic matter that has not yet
decomposed. Most life on earth
exists within a zone no wider
than 20 km where interactions
between the lithosphere,
hydrosphere, and atmosphere
create a habitable environment.
These four subsytems are
closely linked through the
biochemical cycles which,as the
term implies, involves biological,
geological, and chemical
factors. For example, the
hydrosphere interacts with the
atmosphere, biosphere, and
geosphere through water cycle.
