Achievements
Rizal in France and Germany
• He migrated into Paris by his
intention to specialize in
Ophthalmology.
• He choice this specialization
because he wanted to cure his
mother's deteriorating eye
condition.
• He was 24 year Old
• Maximo Viola -medical student
from a wealthyfamily in Bulacan
Rizal worked as an Assistant and apprentice at the eye clinic of
Dr.Lous De Wecker,a leading French ophthalmologist at the time.
Rizal took time to visit his friends Felix R. Hidalgo, Pardo De Tareva,
And Juan Luna. When he was not working at Dr.Wecker's clinic.
Rizal spend many happy hour in Lunas studio. Luna discussed
various art problems with rizal and improved his own painting
technique.Rizal posed in front of a painting of Luna. In Luna's
painting " The Death of Cleopatra", he was one of the Egyptian
priests.

Felix Resurrection Hidalgo
•Febuary 1, 1886 , he was scheduled to travel to Germany .
He arrived in Heidelburg a historic city in Germany known
for its old university and romantic sorrounding,on febuary
3, 1886. He shared a boarding house with a group of
german law students. When the german students
discovered that rizal was an excellent chess player, they
inducted him into the chess player's club.

After a few days Rizal decided to transfer to a boarding


house close to the universityof Heidelberg . He worked
at the university e Eye Hospital under the direction of
Dr.Otto Becker and attend Dr. Becker's and Prof. At
weekends he visited the scenic spots around
Heidelberg which includes the Heidelberg Castle, the
romantic Neckar River, the theatre, and the old
churches.
• April 22, 1886, he wrote a poem to the lovely blooming flowers along
the Neckar River. His favourite flowers was among them: the forget-me-
not.

cities in Germany.

• It was in the university of Heiderberg where Rizal came to know Prof.


Friedrich Ratzel ( well know German historian) and Dr. Hans Meyer
( famous German anthropologist.

•Rizal translated Schillers William Tell into Tagalog for the Filipinos to
be aware of the story of a champion of swiss in dependence.

• He also translate the fairy tales witten by Hans christian Andersen

• He also worked as a proofreader in a publishing company to

augment his allowance.

• He left Leipzig on Oct. 29, 1886 and went yo Dresden, where he

met Dr.Adolph Meyer (director of anthropological and ethnological

museum of the city)

• "Truly, I have never in my life heard a mass whose music had

greater and inotation ",


RIZAL IN BERLIN
• Rizal aarived in Berlin in the evening of Nov. 1, 1886
• Dr. Feodor Jagor -the author of the book Travels in the
philippines

• Dr. Rudolf Virchow - anthropologist and


Dr.Karl Ernest Schweigger- a well known
German opthalmologist , hired Rizal to
work his clinic.
Rizal Achievements
• Rizal was the first Asian to be honored for
membership in theAnthropologist Siciety,
Ethnological Society , and Geographical Society of
Berlin.
• Dr. Virchow recognized Rizal's genius and
invited him to speak before the Berlin
Ethnographic Society.
• the invitation of Dr.Virchow , Rizal
presented a paper in German entitiled
TAGALISCHE VERKUNST ( Tagalog medical
art )

• Morning : He worked as an assistant of Dr. Schweigger's
Clinic
•Evening :Attended lectures in the University of Berlin
•At boarding house: he continued his physical trimming
exercises and practice in speaking German, French and
Italian languages.

• He spend his free time touring
