At first Rizal had a negative impression of the city and its people but later
on he came to like Barcelona due to the prevalence of freedom and
liberalism in the city. Moreover, Rizal saw the good qualities
demonstrated by its residents.

RIzal visited Las Ramblas which is a famous
street in Barcelona
PLAZA DE CATALUÑA
Rizal was welcome by fellow Filipinos in Barcelona,
most of who were his former classmates at Ateneo
Municipal. They had a welcome party at favorite
coffee house at Plaza De Cataluña.
 Paris, France
The prices of food, drinks, laundry, hotel accommodations,
and transportation were too high for Rizal. He mentioned that
“Paris is the costliest capital in Europe.”

LAENNEC HOSPITAL
Rizal observed Dr. Nicaise treating his patients
with Felipe Zamora and Cunanan. He was
stunned to see the advanced facilities in the
accommodation in the said hospital.

Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historic city in Germany.

surroundings. Rizal visited scenic spots around the city.

Rizal met Dr. Otto Becker. He was a distinguished German
ophthalmologist in the University Eye Hospital

WILHEMSFELD
Rizal spent a three-month summer vacation. He described
Wilhemsfeld as a mountainous village.

REVEREND KARL ULLMER

Rizal went to Wilhemsfeld to honor the invitation extended
to him by Reverend Karl Ullmer whom Rizal meet one day
in the woods.

In Wilhemsfeld he studied the German country life and

practice speaking good German with the Ullmer’s family
with whom he live.

On 30th of October 1886, Rizal
visited the Palacio Japonais and
many other interesting places in
Dresden.
Rizal also met Dr. A.B. Mayer who
was a naturalist of the Dresden
University. He was shown
interesting things taken from the
Palaos Islands and from tombs in
the Philippines.

On 9th of November 1886, Rizal was admitted to the Real
Biblioteca de Berlin to do some research and read other books.

On 12th of December 1886, Rizal visited Viola at the Central

Hotel early in the morning and took breakfast.

ETHNOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF BERLIN

Rizal became a member of the Ethnographic Society of Berlin where he had the rare
opportunity of hearing the interesting lecture of Dr. Donitz on pre-historic Japanese tombs.

DR. TEODOR JAGOR

On the 11th of January 1887, Rizal met personally Dr. Teodor Jagor who invited him to attend
the monthly luncheon of the members of the Geographic Society. In one of luncheons, Rizal
ws able to meet Dr. Virchow, president of the Anthropological Society of Berlin.

ANTHROPOLOGICAL SOCIETY AND THE GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF BERLIN

On February 1887, Rizal became a member of this society.

On the 13th of May 1887, Rizal met Prof. Bluementritt
for the first time. With Prof. Blumentritt as their guide,
Rizal and Viola visited the churches , the residence of the
Bishop and other important buildings of the city.

Rizal and Maximo Viola boarded at the Hotel
Metropole. With the help of Mr. Masner, Rizal and
Viola was able to see the famous landmarks and
museums.
They also meet two good friends of Blumentritt -
Masner and Nordman, Austrian scholars.
Nuremberg, Germany
This is one of the oldest city in Germany. Rizal saw
the horrible torture machines used in inquisition and
was impressed by the manufacture of dolls
Rheinfall
At Rheinfall, Rizal and Viola saw a
waterfall that he mentioned as “the
most beautiful waterfall of Europe”.
 Geneva, Switzerland
On the 6th of June 1887, Rizal and Viola arrived at
Geneva and boarded at Rue due Rhone 3, Pension
Bel-Air.

Here Rizal expressed his feelings against the

exhibition of the Igorots in Madrid side by side with
the animals and plants.
JUNE 27,1887

Rizal went to Italy.

He visited Turin, Milan, Venice and
Italy
Florence.

On June 27, 1887, Rizal reached

On June 29th, Rizal visited for the first time the Vatican.

Rizal was impressed by the magnificent edifices,

particularly of St. Peter’s Basilica which was also his feast
day during that time
