What Is the Rock Cycle?
There are three main types of rocks on Earth – igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Rocks can change from one type to another. The rock cycle shows how rocks can change
from one type to another through many processes. These processes are continuous and can
take millions of years.

Large rock pieces can be broken down into small piece by weathering.

The small rock pieces can be moved to another place by erosion.

Rock particles settle to the bottom of the seabed as sediments. Over time, sediments build
up in layers. This process is known as sedimentation. Eventually, sedimentary rocks are
formed.

Sedimentary rocks can get poshed deep below the Earth’s surface. The high temperature
and pressure cause these rocks to become metamorphic rocks.

When metamorphic rocks are heated at high temperatures, they melt to form magma.

Magma rises to the Earth’s surface through volcanoes. When cooled, igneous rocks are
formed.
