PHOTOVOLTIC SOLAR CELL
•This is based on crystalline film
technology,such as silicon and GaAs
semiconductor materials.
•90% solar cell is based on silicon-based
material as it is more efficient ,abundant
and inexpensive.
•GaAs is oldest material used that has been
used for solar cell .
• The p-type and n-type silicon
semiconductor Silicon semiconductor are

• When in contact ,generates electric
field electric field .
Extra free electron in n-side
are are attracted to fill holes in
p-side .When in contact

or junction of semiconductors, electron and hole mix to form a

barrier preventing electrons on n-side from crossing to p-side .

This barrier of electric field separating two sides when

equillibrium is reached and acts as a diode allowing the flow of
electrons in one direction ,from the p-type semiconductor to n-type .
This is how electricity generates.
