B. If the pattern continues, what will be the area of grid 8?
B. Use the grid patterns to answer each question. Each =1
square unit ().
Square B Square A
The area of square B is 1 square unit and the area of square A is 16 square units.
The answer is 16 times.
16 times
7) How many squares of side 2cm can be cut from a rectangle 4cm by 8cm?
4 ÷ 2 = 2, 8 ÷ 2 = 4, 2 x 4 = 8 2-cm squares
8) A chocolate bar is 6cm by 4cm. What is the area of 4 chocolate bars of the same size?
6 x 4 = 24cm2 , 24 x 4 = 96cm2
9) The area of a lot is 432. If the length is 24m, what is the width?
w = 18m2
10) How many square tiles of side 1dm2 are needed to tile a floor of a bathroom 3m long and
2m wide?
1m = 10dm, 3m = 30dm , 2m = 20dm ,
30 x 20 = 600 square tiles
11) An artificial grass carpet measuring 12m by 8m is placed on the floor of a mini park which
measures 20m by 15m. Find the area of the mini park not covered by the grass carpet.
l =12 x 2 = 24cm ;
w = 9 x 2 = 18cm ; 24 x 18 = 432cm2
14) A square has a side of 9m while a rectangle has a length of 6m and width of 8m. What is
the difference between their areas?
9 x 9 = 81m2 ;
6 x 8 = 48m2 ; 81 – 48 = 33m2
15) A rectangle has a perimeter of 48 cm and area of 128 cm2. Find its dimensions
2l = 32 2w = 16 ;
32 + 16 = 48 ; 16 x 8 = 128cm2
15) A rectangle has a perimeter of 48 cm and area of 128 cm2.
Find its dimensions
15) A rectangle has a perimeter of 48 cm and area of 128 cm2. Find its dimensions
We first get the sum of the length and the width, that is by dividing 48 by 2, 48 2 = 24.
Since the area is 128, think of two numbers whose product is 128 and whose sum is 24.
Checking: 2l = 32 2w = 16 ; 32 + 16 = 48 ; 16 x 8 = 128cm2
III. CHALLENGE!
1) The perimeter of a rectangular placemat is 38cm. If its length is 12cm, find its area.
P= 2l + 2w,
38 = 2 (12) + 2w,
area = 12 x 7 = 84cm2
2w = 38 – 24,
2w =14,
w = 14 ÷ 2 = 7cm,
2) The perimeter of a sliced cake is 96cm. Its width is 12cm. Find its length.
P= 2l + 2w,
96 = 2l + 2(12),
96 = 2l + 24, length = 36cm
2l = 96 -24 = 72,
72 2 = 36,
3) Two identical rectangles with a perimeter of 24m each was used to form a square. What
is the area of the square formed?
For two rectangles to form a square, twice the width must be equal
to its length. Hence , we simply divide 24 by 3. 24 divided by 3 is 8.
The area of the square formed is 64 .
Checking: 2l = 16 + 2w = 8 , 16 + 8 = 24 ; 8 x 8 = 64m2
4) In the figure, STUV is a square. Find the area of the shaded region.
S
T
The area of the whole square is 12 x 12 =144 .
12 cm
Then divide 144 by 2 , it is 72 .
V U
The area of the shaded region is 72
5) What is the greatest number of 2-cm squares that can be cut
from the rectangle?
18 ÷ 2 = 9,
10 cm 10 ÷ 2 = 5,
9 x 5 = 45 2-cm squares
18 cm
6) Find the maximum number of rectangles measuring 6cm by 4cm that can be cut from a
rectangle 126cm by 92cm.
126 ÷ 6 =21,
92 ÷ 4 = 23,
21 x 23 = 483 rectangles
