OVERVIEW OF BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT
• Biological or secondary treatment as it commonly referred to is very
similar in concept to the natural biodegradation of organic matter by
aerobic bacteria.
• In biological treatment oxygen supply to the bacteria is consumed
under control lab conditions so that most of the body is removed in
the treatment plant rather than in the watercourse.
• The principal requirements of biological waste treatment process or
an adequate amount of bacteria that field on the organic material
present in the West water oxygen and some means of achieving
contact between the bacteria and the Organics.
Two commonly used methods
• Activated sludge systems
• Biological film systems

• Activated sludge systems:

• In the activated sludge system the waste water is bought into contact
with a diverse group of microorganisms in form of suspension in an
aerated tank.

FLOWSHEET
AIR SUPPLY AND MODIFICATION:
• In the initial stages of contact between microorganisms and
the organic matter in the Waste water the process requires a
great deal of oxygen.
• In the conventional systems a reaction and mixing archived
at a fairly uniform paid over the length of variation tank as a
result extremely low oxygen concentration previval at inlet
end of the tank.
• Several variations of the Conventional Systems how been
suggested to meet the rate of oxygen consumption at
minimal cost.
AIR SUPPLY AND MODIFICATIONS:
TAPERED AERATION:
STEP AERATION:
COMPLETE MIX SYSTEM:
CONTACT STABILIZATION:
 CONTACT BEDS

 INTERMITTENT SAND FILTERS

• TRICKLING SAND FILTERS

• It is used to remove the suspended solids

of the dissolved organic load from the
waste water by using microbial populations.

• The microorganisms are responsible for

degradation of the organic material

TYPES OF FILTERS
SUSPENDED GROWTH PROCESS:
• if the microorganisms are suspended in the wastewater
during the biological operation then process is known as
suspended growth process.

ATTACHED GROWTH PROCESS:

• process in which the microorganisms that are attached to
a surface or which they growth is known as attached growth
BIOLOGICAL PROCESS process

COMBINED PROCESS:
• these consists of both attached growth as well as suspended
growth process.
• purification by aerobic decomposition of
organic matter
• biological film is former around the filtering
media by microorganisms
• outer portion of this film layer is called as
slime layer
• As thickness of Slime layer increases
• it create anaerobic environment near to the
surface of the filtering media
• microorganisms goes into endogenous face
of growth and lose their ability to clean to the
media surface
TRICKLING FILTER THEORY
• sloughing the breakup of biomass from
Slime layer
TRICKLING FILTERS
TRICKLING FILTER
Trickling filter consist of many following
parts are components:
• A Rotary armed that's press waste water over
a filter medium by spray nozzles.
• filter media: rocks, plastic, aggregates and
other materials are used size of material (25
mm to 75 mm).
• Under drainage system: The water is a
collected at the bottom of the filter for further
treatment
TRICKLING FILTERS:
• Filter Walls:walls are made
honeycombed to circulate the
air, some times ventilation duct
is provided.
• Depth: depth of medium is 1.2
to 2.4 m.
• Honeycomb: structured wall is
provided for a circulation of air
ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS VS TRICKLING FILTER:
• DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS VS TRICKLING FILTER:

TRICKLING FILTER ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS

1)bacterial growth is fixed on the media 1)bacterial growth is suspended as a
dispersed of floc
2)all solids from the settler harvested 2)solid from the settler or partially
recycled.
3)less sensitive to shock loading, more 3)more sensitive to shock loading
stable required closer process control

4)produce insects and odours 4)produce spray clouds

5) less effective and removing Disease 5)more effective in removing pathogens

causing microorganisms than trickling filters
6)low operating cost 6)high operating cost
