You’re going to read an entry from Bob’s blog on looking back in time
technologically. Bob was born in 1973. Quite a few technological
advancements have happened in his life so far. What type of
technology do you think was available during various points of his life?
Part 4.0: Optional Activities 4.2: Practice

June 29: Looking Back

I’m as addicted to technology as the next guy. I’m on the
computer all day at work (on the web, too. Shh, don’t tell).
I email, I chat, I video conference, I live on social networks.
I have a smartphone that keeps me connected anywhere
between work and home.
Is my life better now than in the past? I’m not convinced.
I got my first email account in 1996 in college. That means
that somehow I existed for eighteen years communicating
with friends and family—basically by phone.
And no, not a cell phone, a real phone with a wire that
attached to a wall, and a cord that attached to the phone.
No, cordless phones haven’t always been around!
Part 4.0: Optional Activities 4.2: Practice

And get this, when my sister was gabbing on the phone all
afternoon, and I tried to call my mom from the library for a
ride home from a pay phone (I’ll explain in a minute what
that was), I’d get a busy signal! There was no call waiting. I’d
often just end up walking home knowing that waiting for my
sister to get off the phone was pointless.
Back to the pay phone: yes, there used to be these phones
in booths. You would throw in a couple coins and dial a
number to call someone. And somehow it worked. And we
existed.
Once cell phones took off, I was one of the last of my friends
to get on board. What did I need one for? I was either at
work (where there was a phone) or at home (where I had a
phone). No one needed to get in touch with me that badly
that they couldn’t wait for me to be at either location.
Part 4.0: Optional Activities 4.2: Practice

Comments

Nice travel back in time, Bob! I have to

add this: Remember how the phone just
rang and you had to pick up and say
hello? You couldn’t screen a call and
decide whether to pick up or not.
Remember that element of surprise?
Today, people set up times to talk with
friends and family. We supposedly have
more time now with all our technology, but
somehow, before it existed, we actually
had time to pick up a ringing phone and
just talk with whoever called us. Hmmm…

Do you remember the time Bob is describing?

Do your parents?

Can you imagine being without a cell phone or smartphone?
