Salt in Crude 2019
Salt in Crude 2019
99700-6
Salt content of Crude Oils
ASTM D3230
IP 265
Background
• Salt content of crude oil
• Typically chlorides
• Sources of contamination
– Crude oil exploration/production
– Handling (tankers ballast water)
2 NaCl + H2O = HCl + Na2O
– Reservoir/formation waters
– Secondary recovery water
• Accumulates in stills, heaters, exchangers
causing fowling
• Can form hydrochloric acid (highly corrosive)
• Salts deactivate catalysts
Test method
• Calibrate apparatus with a mixed salt
solution
– 20 % MgCl2, 10 % CaCl2, 70 %
NaCl in water,
– Mix salt solution with alcohol
and xylene
– Measure conductivity versus
“salt content”
• Make up crude oil sample with
alcohol & xylene
– 40 mL of xylene
– 10 mL of the crude oil sample
– 50 mL with mixed alcohol
solvent
Ease of use
Seta advantage
