DIFFERENT TYPES OF

CHARGING PROCESS
Quarter 3 – Week 8
Ms. Joana Joy A. Palomares
Appliances at home like T.V., radio, washing
machine are powered by electricity. It makes
our daily activities easier.

Let us discuss
how
electricity is
produced
BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRICITY

THALES OF MILETUS (620 BCE – 546 BC)

• Electricity was first discovered about 2500 years ago.

• The Greek scientist Thales noticed that a piece of amber

(the hard fossilized sap from trees) attracted straw or
feathers when he rubbed it with a cloth.

• The word “electricity” comes from the Greek word for

amber – “elektron”. Thales is also known as the father of
philosophy.
BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRICITY

WILLIAM GILBERT (1600s)

BRIEF HISTORY
OF
• The word “electric” was first used in 1600 by William ELECTRICITY
Gilbert, a doctor to Queen Elizabeth I.

• He carried out experiments and discovered that

materials such as diamond, glass and wax behaved
in a similar way to amber
BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRICITY
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1752)
BRIEF HISTORY
OF
• Benjamin Franklin flies kite during thunderstorm On
June 10, 1752,
ELECTRICITY

• Benjamin Franklin’s most famous experiment led to

the invention of the lightning rod and the
understanding of positive and negative charges.

• By conducting the kite experiment Franklin proved that

lighting was an electrical discharge and realized
that it can be charged over a conductor into the
ground providing a safe alternative path and
eliminating the risk of deadly fires

HAIR COMB EXPERIMENT
1. What
happened to
the bits of
paper place
near the comb
after using it?

The bits of
paper will
attached to
the hair comb
HAIR COMB EXPERIMENT
1. Why do you say
so?

When you rub the

comb in your hair it
creates a static
charge and when you
bring the comb near
the bits of paper,
the bits of paper will
then attached to the
comb because it has
opposite charges.
STRUCTURE OF AN ATOM

1. What do you call the

positively charged particles?
PROTON
2. What are the negatively
charged particles?
ELECTRON
STRUCTURE OF AN ATOM

3. If an atom has equal number of

positively charged particles and
negatively charged particles, what
will be the charged of the atom?

An atom is electrically neutral

because they have an equal
number of protons and electrons.
Electric charges can be transferred using
different ways. How do objects get charged?

++++ ------ = 4 + (-6) = -2 ( negatively charged )

4 protons (+) and 6 electrons (-) = 2 electrons

++++++++ ----- = 8 + (-5) = 3 ( positively charged )

8 protons (+) and 5 electrons (-) = 3 protons

++++ ---- = 4 + (-4) = 0 ( neutral )

4 protons (+ ) and 4 electrons (-) =0
The attraction of charges from the given
example follows the Law of Charges, which
states that opposite charges attract and
like charges repel.

(+) (-) = attract

(+) (+)
(-) (-) = repel
LET US TRY THIS!

1.) 4 (protons) + 5 (electrons) = 4 + (-5) = -1 Or 1 electron

2.) 7 (protons) + 2 (electrons) = 7 + (-2) = Or 5 protons

5

3.) 10 (protons) + 15 (electrons) = 10 + (-15) =

-5 Or 5 electrons

4.) 9 (protons) + 9 (electrons) = 9 + (-9) =

0 neutral
5.) 6 (protons) + 6 (electrons) = 6 + (-6) =
0 neutral
The process of supplying the electric charge
(electrons) to an object or losing the electric charge
(electrons) from an object is called charging.

An uncharged object can be charged in

different ways.

There are three ways to do it: friction,

conduction, and induction.
CHARGING BY FRICTION

Charging by friction – the process

which an object gets charged when it
Vis rubbed against another object or
there is a direct contact between the
two objects.

Example: Bits of paper is attracted to

the comb after using it.
CHARGING BY CONDUCTION

Charging by conduction - the

process in which an object gets
charged by making contact with a
charged object.

Example: The two balloons have the

same charge causing them to move
away from each other.
CHARGING BY INDUCTION

Charging by induction – the

process in which an object gets by
charged object without direct contact.

Example: The leaves of the

electroscope (yellow ) move
separately when the charged rod is
placed near the electroscope.
