PRACTICAL NATIONALISM
IN DAPITAN
As pointed out in the previous chapter, Rizal was
deported to Dapitan by virtue of Despujol's gubernatorial
decree of 1892. In the four years of banishment to
Dapitan, Rizal demonstrated practical nationalism by
living-out what he had preached to his countrymen and
fellow reformers. This chapter is focused on Rizal's exile
in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896.

Rizal arrived in Dapitan on July 17, 1892 on board the

steamer Cebu.
DURING HIS TIME IN DAPITAN
RIZAL AND CAPTAIN CARNICERO
Since Rizal was not willing to comply with said of the
conditions, he stayed in the house of Captain Ricardo
Carnicero the politico-commander of the Island who
became his guardian and friend. In the frequent
exchange of views between the two, Rizal
communicated to Carnicero his political beliefs at the
time of his exile in Dapitan.
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP IN
DAPITAN
In his 4 years staying in Dapitan, Rizal proved
and demonstrated as a passion thinker by
means of actions to show the interest to serve
his countrymen with his limited resources.
RIZAL REBUILDS HIS HOME AT
TALISAY
Rizal bought a 16-hectare abandoned farm by
the shore of Talisay, a barrio near Dapitan,
where he built a permanent home. With his
students and some laborers, he cleared the area
and planted cacao, coffee, coconuts, and fruit
trees.
RIZAL-PASTELLS DEBATE ON
RELIGION
Father Pastells tried his best to win back Rizal
to the fold of Catholicism. Divine faith, he told
Rizal, supersedes everything, including reason,
self esteem, and individual judgment. No
matter how wise a man is, he argued, his
intelligence is limited, hence he needs the
guidance of God.

RIZAL AND THE REVOLUTION OF
1896 In June 1896, Bonifacio sent an emissary to Dapitan to obtain
Rizal's support, but Rizal refused to participate in an armed
revolution. On August 19, 1896, Katipunan was discovered by a
Spanish friar, which resulted in the start of the Philippine
Revolution. The revolution initially flared up in Central Luzon.

Rizal sent his letter of
reconsideration of his
situation to Blanco on
February 13, 1894. Owing to
Blanco's involvement in the
Moro campaign, he did not
reply to Rizal's
correspondence. - Blanco
then visited Dapitan in
November of the same year.

ADIOS DAPITAN
Finally after 4 years in exile,
Dr. Jose Rizal is on his way to
another journey in his life. He
was going back to Manila to
prepare his medical service to
the Spanish Military Cuba,
Havanna.
THE REVOLUTION BREAKS
OUT
On August 19, 1896,
Katipunan was discovered by
a Spanish friar, which resulted
in the start of the Philippine
Revolution. The revolution
initially flared up in Central
Luzon.
RIZAL SAILS TO SPAIN FOR CUBA

He proceeded to Spain aboard the boat Isla de Panay, but upon his arrival at
Barcelona, he was thrown into a dungeon called Muntjuich. He was then
ordered back to Manila, heavily guarded and in chains. On his way to Spain,
he could have escaped to Singapore upon the instigation of some Filipinos
there, but he refused to consider such a course
