MEASURES OF POSITION

QUANTILES
 is a score distribution where the scores are
divided into different equal parts.

3 Kinds of Quantiles
 Quartiles
 Decile
Percentile
QUARTILE
 is a score point that divides the scores in the
distribution into four (4) equal parts.

First Quartile –
- 25% of observations fall below and 75% above
 Second Quartile –
- 50% of observations fall below and 50% above
 Third Quartile –
- 75% of observations fall below and 25% above
DECILES
 is a score point that divides the scores in the
distribution into ten (10) equal parts.

 the deciles determine the values for 10%,

20%.... and 90% of the data.

 coincides with the median.

PERCENTILES
 is a score point that divides the scores in the
distribution into ten (100) equal parts.

 the deciles determine the values for 1%, 2%.... and

99% of the data.

 coincides with the median.

QUANTILES FOR UNGROUPED DATA

 Stepsto be followed in solving quantiles for

ungrouped data:
1. Arrange the scores in ascending order

2. Compute quantiles using the formula:

𝑖𝑛
Quartile position = 𝑡h 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚
4

where i= 1, 2, 3

n = number of observations
Decile position =
where = 1, 2, 3, …, 9

Percentile position =

where = 1, 2, 3, …., 99
3. Starting from the lowest score, locate the
score corresponding to the obtained position
in the array of data.
Example:

Using the given data:

6, 8, 10, 12, 12, 14, 15, 20, 26

QUANTILES OF THE GROUPED DATA
Formulas
where:

= lower class boundary of the

quantile class
c = class size
cf = cumulative frequency of the
class interval preceding the
quantile class
f = frequency of the quantile class
n = total number of frequencies
i = position of the given quantile
Example:
The data for the scores of 10 students in Filipino class are
given below.

Scores f
21-23 3
24 - 26 2
27 - 29 4
30 - 32 1
