SHEAR CENTRE

• The shear centre is the point through

which if the resultant shear force acts
then member is subjected too Simple
bending without twisting.
• It means a load acting on a beam through
shear centre will produce bending without
torsion or twisting.
• Shear centre is also called centre of
fiexure

Rules to find out shear center
Rule.1) Shear center is always lie on
symmetrical axis. If C/s have more than one
symmetrical axis shear center will be
intersection of both symmetrical axis.
Rule.2) If c/s have two narrow rectangular
strip shear center will be at intersection of
long axis of both the rectangular strip.

Shear Center for Angle Section

force V at any cross section. The cross sectional dimensions
are shown in figure

EQUAL ANGLE SECTION

Consider an equal angle section subjected to a shearing force V at

any cross section. The cross sectional dimensions are shown in
figure
Let, b = Length of equal legs
t = Thickness of the legs
EQUAL ANGLE SECTION
The horizontal shear stress ‘ τ ’ developed in the section is given by
the relation.

τ=

where V= Vertical shear force at the section.

I= Second moment of area of complete angle section about the
neutral axis.
A=Area of the section above the point at which shear stress is
required.
Ӯ=Distance of the center of gravity of the area A measured from
neutral axis.
EQUAL ANGLE SECTION

Consider an element dz at a distance z from O.

A=(b-z)t

EQUAL ANGLE SECTION

Consider a channel with equal flange sections subjected to

a shear force ‘V’ at any cross section. The cross-sectional
dimensions are as shown in Fig. The shear center is determined as
the position of the resultant of forces , and acting on the cross
section.

Considering an elemental area and unit width , the shear

stress at any point is expressed as

We have

Therefore, the shear force is obtained as

EQUAL ANGLE SECTION
Determine the position of the shear centre of a semicircular ring
of mean radius ‘R’ shown in fig which is subjected to shear force
‘V’.
Consider an elemental area ‘R.dθ’ at a distance ‘θ’ from the
vertical axis. The thickness of the ring is ‘t’.
The elemental area is expressed as,
a =R.Ɵ.t
da=R.dƟ.t
AӮ=R.Ɵ.t.RcosƟ
