THE MARAGTAS
• It is the history of Panay

from which the Bisayans are descendend to the
arrival of the Spaniards.

PEDRO ALCANTARA MONTECLARO

• Was born in Miag-ao Iloilo on October 15, 1850.

• Graduated from the Seminaro Colegio de Jaro in


1865.

• Married twice, and had five children

• Teniente Mayor in 1891

• Gobernadorcillo in 1892-1894

• Became a Local hero during the Revolution


and the American invasion both for his
Leadership and Diplomacy.

occupation of the area.

• 1st President of Miag-ao in 1901-1903

• He died on April 13, 1909.

THE MARAGTAS
Six chapter and an epilogue
1st chapter - former customs, clothes, dialect, heredity,
organization and other of the Aetas of Panay with special
mention of Marikudozsan son of old Chief Polpulan.
2nd chapter - ten Datus flight from Borneo and esaped Datu
Makatunaw and the 10 datus purchase the island of Panay from
Marikudo.
3rd chapter - romance of sumakwel, Kapinangan and her lover
Gurung - gurung.

4th chapter - tale of ten datus, telling of their political


arrangements and their circum navigation of the island.
5th chapter - language, commerce, clothing, customs,
marriages, funerals, morning habits, cockfighting,
timekeeping techniques, calendars and personal
characteristics.
Final chapter- list of Castilian officials between 1637 and
1808
Epilogue - few 18th century dates from Miag-ao.

Four stringent sanctions

1. Those too Lazy to work were bonded over to the wealthy until they
reformed, failing which they were cas out society to live with negritos.

2. Polygamy was practiced until population control became


necessary, was restricted and the children of those too poor to suport
them were drowned.
3. Unredeemed adultery was punished by death or disinheritance.

4. Fingers of thieves were cut off.
