Active – Passive Voice
Example:
(active) The postman delivers the letters at 09.00.
Step 1 – identify the object of the active sentence and place it at
the beginning of the passive sentence.
Step 2 – identify the tense of the active verb and put the verb to
be into the same tense.
Step 3 – turn the main active verb into the past participle form.
(passive) The letters are delivered at 09.00.
Example/s:
My mother read
the prayer
aloud.
We decorated
our home for the
holidays.
They distribute
gift bags to
indigent families.
My sister sent
the groceries.
The doctor
told him to
rest.
Yeyeng teaches
her students to
read more
books.
Passive to Active Voice
 To change a verb from passive to
active voice, make the subject of
the passive verb the object of the
active verb. The person or thing
performing the action then
becomes the subject of the new
sentence.
Example/s:
Passive: The essay was written by
Leopoldo Serrano.

Active: Leopoldo Serrano wrote


the essay.
The letter was
signed by the
principal.
Guests to the
party were
welcomed by the
host.
We were
forced to sleep
by my mother.
The teacher was
pleased with the
boy’s work.
She is
frightened of
spiders.
My mother’s bag
was found by a
little boy.
Lina was given a
necklace by her
godmother.
The mail is
delivered by
Berto.
