ROBREDO BENT ON

DECLARING PH EDUCATION
CRISIS IF ELECTED
GROUP 2
INTRODUCTION
Declaring a national educational crisis will
be among the first things Vice President Leni
Robredo will do if elected president in the
national elections of 2022, she reaffirmed.
Robredo was questioned on her plans for the
education sector by a student leader and a
private school teacher during a mini-rally in
the municipality on Saturday at noon. This
was particularly important given the rising
number of youth who are not in school and
the declining standard of education.
• Robredo argued that because the nation is falling behind in international comparisons
and rankings, it is necessary to proclaim an education crisis. Robredo also bemoaned the
meager funding given to the nation's educational system. “Isa sa mga una kong gagawin
pag-upo bilang pangulo, mag-declare ng education crisis. Bakit kailangan natin mag-
declare ng education crisis? Kasi po nakakahiya na tayo ngayon,” the Vice President told
the crowd at the Lemery municipal hall. “Dati napakahusay ng ating kalidad ng
edukasyon pero bago pa man nagpandemya, ‘yung mga international assessment bodies,
lagi tayong last. Nakakahiya ‘yun,” she added. She referred to a United Nations (UN)
proposal that the nation devote at least 6% of its GDP on education. She points out that
only 3% of the GDP is currently going to the education sector.
Vice President Leni Robredo claims that The Philippines' educational
system is a concern. The most important factor in a country's progress is
education. Education is simply an investment to accomplish both human
and economic expansion. It is a universal truth that societies that have
achieved the pinnacles of development and success have done so by
employing information and education as a tool. Yet, it is one of the
country's biggest issues. In order to paint a more accurate picture of the
situation in the Philippines, Robredo encouraged education officials to
present an update using their most recent statistics. She also mentioned a
United Nations (UN) guideline that the nation devotes at least 6% of its
GDP to education. The education sector receives just 3% of the GDP,
she observes.
In addition, Robredo emphasized that programs supported
by the public and commercial sectors might not be in line
with societal demands. She used the example of the
business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. The vice
president emphasized that while the BPO sector offers
many job prospects for Filipinos, there is a disconnect
between what graduates learn in school and the actual
requirements of the job market. She said that "Our Courses
are not aligned to the need of our industry." A child may
graduate from a course, but he won't find a proper job
because the things he learned are not what the industry is
looking for.
The article's sole objective, in the end, was to highlight the
flaws in the contemporary educational system. The school
system falls short of offering intellectual fulfillment and,
as a result, a viable way of life where interactions with
other people, groups of people, and nature may be built
that are mutually beneficial and essential to the
development of society. The systemic failure of our
educational system has created a demand for fresh
perspectives in this area.
As early as 2012, the United Nations have been
calling on the national government about its GDP
spending for the education sector. Recently, a study
from the World Bank said 80 percent of Filipino
children do not have the reading and numerical skills
required for their age. This is not the first time that
Robredo has called for an education crisis to be
declared in the country. In July 2021, after the World
Bank released its reports, the Vice President said
greater attention should be placed on education.
There were recent calls for a reform of the education
system after a young participant in the Pinoy Big
Brother television show referred to the three martyred
Filipino priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora as“MaJoHa” and not “Gomburza.”
