     Capsule
can be refer to as a solid dosage form in
which one or more medicaments are embedded in a
water soluble, biodegradable shell made up of a
gelatin.
Capsule consists of two types namely;

• Hard gelatin capsules  • Soft gelatin shell

Advantages of a capsule
• Capsules have a better bioavailability and onset of action than a
tablet.
• Capsule shells are physiologically inert therefore can easily and
quickly be digested in the gastrointestinal tract.
• Capsules are easily handled
• Capsules are easily administered orally due to their smooth and
slippery in nature which means they can
be swallowed easily orally.
• Unpleasant odour, taste, and colour of a drug can be easily
masked with capsule.
Disadvantages of a capsule
• Concentrated solutions which requires dilution are incompatible
with capsules
• Thus, concentrated solutions if administered in capsules leads
to stomach irritation.
• Hygroscopic drugs cannot be filled into capsule.
