LIGHT AND COLORS

Interaction of Light

Block 18, Lesson 4

When can you see the colors of things – in light or when it is dark?
What makes us see the colors of things?

• We see the colors of things

only in the presence of light.
02
• At night, colors cannot be
seen because there is no
light.
Aim:
Today, we will be able to
explain why we see things in
different colors.
Resources Needed
XSEED Content Book, Worksheet 3, plastic ruler, flashlight
Let’s do this!
-Look at the white flashlight.
-Write the color it emits in your Science notebook.
-Then, hold a plastic ruler from one end, and keep it close to one of your eyes.
-Close the other eye and tilt the ruler slowly from side to side.
-Now see how many colors of the flashlight you can see through the ruler.

Materials:
-plasticruler
-white flashlight
How many colors of light could you see without using the ruler?
Using the ruler?
Where do you think these colors of light come from?

• We saw only the white color of the light without

using the ruler.

• On using the ruler, we saw many colors in the

02
light.

• This is because white light is a combination of 7

colors – red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo, and violet.
Most leaves are green.
If there are 7 colors in white light, why do leaves appear green?
How do we see different colors of objects in the presence of light?

• When white light falls on a thing, some colors from the

light are absorbed while some are reflected.

02
The color of light that an object reflects off its surface
determines its color.

• For example, green leaves absorb all the other colors of

the white light and reflect only the green color. So, they
appear green.
How do we see different colors of objects in the presence of light?

• Some things also reflect more

than 1 color of light, creating a
mix of 2 or more colors. 02
• This is why we see things of
many different colors around
us.
When do we see things as black and white?

• White things reflect all the colors

of white light and absorb none; so
they appear white. 02
• Black things absorb all the colors
of light and reflect none; so they
appear black.
