PROTEIN

WHAT ARE PROTEINS?

 Are made up of the elements C, H, O, N, and
S:
 Second most molecules in the human body
and make up about 10% to 20% of the mass of
a cell;
 Consist of a long chain of amino acids-
building blocks of protein;
 Serve as enzymes that act as catalysts.
 50 or more amino acids forms a protein.
AMINO ACIDS
 Structure: Functional Group
20 AMINO ACIDS
 11 – Non-essential amino acid- can be produced
by the body.
 Of the 11 essential amino acids, 8 are called
Conditional amino acids- arginine, glutamine,
tyrosine, cysteine, glycine, proline, serine, and
ornithine- Our body cannot produce these amino
acids if we are sick or under stress.
 3 – alanine, asparagine, aspartate are
nonessential
 9 – essential amino acids- our body cannot
produced these amino acids so they are essential
in our diet.
 Adult only need 8 out of 9.These are valine,
isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine,
phenylalanine, threonine, and tryptophan.
 Histidine is only essential for infants.
