ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY OF

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
(External & internal genitalia)
GROUP 1
1) NURUL IZZATI SHAHIDA BINTI JUSOH @ IBRAHIM
2) SITI NURLATIFAH BINTI MD SUBRI
3) NUR FAJRINA BINTI RAMLI
OBJECTIVE

• 1) Describe the structure of the external and internal

genitalia
• 2) Explain the structure and function of reproductive
system
Structure Of The External Genitalia
• Mons pubis
• Labia Majora
• Labia Minora
• Clitoris
• Hymen
• Vestibular gland (Bartholin’s glands)
• Blood supply, lymph drainage and nerve supply :
1) The arterial supply
2) the venous drainage
3) Lymph drainage
4) Nerve Supply
• Perineum
• Mons Pubis
- A pad of fatty tissue, covered by skin which lies over the symphysis pubis. After puberty a growth
of hair develops on it

• Labia Majora
- Two larged folds of fats and alveolar tissue which form the boundary of the vulva, there are
composed of skin, fibrous tissue and fat and contain of sebaceous gland and sweat gland
- Mid anteriorly at mons pubis
- Joint in front of the symphysis pubis and posteriorly they merge with the skin of the perineum
- At puberty hair grow at the mons pubis and on the lateral surface of the labia majora
- Pass backward to the anus became flatter and merge into the perineal body.
- The more fragile tissue of external genitalia
- The laminal portion of round ligament are inserted into the fatty tissue.

• Labia Minora
- Two smaller fold of skin between the labia majora, contain numerous subcutaneous gland.
- Cleft the between the labia minora is the vestibule.
- The vagina, urethra and ducts of the greater vestibule gland open into vestibules
• Clitoris
- Correspond to day penis in the male and contain sensory nerve
endings and erectile tissue but it has no reproductive significance.
• Hymen
- A thin layer of mucus membrane which partially occurs the opening
of the vagina
- Normally incomplete to allow for passage of menstrual flow.
• Vestibular Glands (Bartholin’s glands)
- one of each side near the vaginal opening
- They are about the size of a small pea and have a
ducts, opening into the vestibule immediately lateral
to the attachment of the hymen
- They secrete mucus that keeps the vulva moist
• Blood supply, lymph drainage and nerve supply
1) arterial supply – internal pudendal arteries that branch from
the internal iliac arteries and by external pudendal arteries that
branch from the femoral arteries

2) The venous drainage – this forms a large plexus which

eventually drains into the internal iliac veins

3) Lymph drainage- this is through the superficial inguinal nodes

4) Nerve supply – this is by branches from pudendal nerves

Perineum
- area extending from the base of the labia minora to the anal canal
- it is roughly triangular and consists of connective tissue, muscle and fat
- it gives attachment to the muscles of the pelvic floor
Structure of the internal genitalia
• Vulva
• Vagina
• Uterus
• Uterine tubes (Fallopian tubes)
• Ovaries
