CAF 404: AIRCRAFT AIR-

CONDITIONING AND
PRESSURIZATION
CAPT. NATHANIEL DE LOS REYES
OXYGEN SYSTEM
Requirement for Hazardous physiological
conditions
supplemental oxygen at high
altitudes.
Safe and comfortable flight
environment
3 Basic configurations:

 Continuous-flow
 Diluter-demand
 Pressure-demand
BUILT-IN
PORTABLE
OXYGEN SYSTEM:
CONTINUOUS FLOW

Provides continuous delivery of  Adjustable-Flow

oxygen to the user. (25,000 ft.) - Regulated oxygen
supply pressure

 Constant-Flow
- Delivers oxygen at constant rate

 Altitude-Compensated
Excessive - Automatically adjusts
amount of oxygen flow depending on
usage altitude
OXYGEN SYSTEM: C O N T I N U O U S F L O W
MASK

Adjustable-flow & Altitude-compensated

Cannula
- Inserted into Regulated with atmospheric pressure:
the nose
(18,000ft.) Low Altitude – partially inflates w/ oxygen
High Altitude – increase inflation w/ oxygen
Oronasal – Covers both the nose and mouth of the user.
Rebreather – Used to dilute the oxygen with exhaled air.
OXYGEN SYSTEM: C O N T I N U O U S F L O W
MASK
Flow Indicator Flow Restrictors
Oxygen travels up to Installed in either distribution outlet or
distribution outlet mask connector to vary oxygen flow rate.
– Connect mask
Pilot > Passengers
OXYGEN SYSTEM:
Special Regulator unit with valve that
opens and closes depending on
altitude.
DILUTER DEMAND PRESSURE DEMAND
Quick- Donning Mask

 Dilutes oxygen for longer  Provides positive pressure

duration oxygen

 Adequate respiration up to  Required for 40,000ft. and

40,000ft. above
OXYGEN SYSTEM:
DILUTER & PRESSURE DEMAND

Regulator Unit:
 Diaphragm operated demand valve
- opens when inhaling
- closes when exhaling

 Control switches to select operating mode

- dilution valve depending on situation
- hold test button w/ mask on to check
proper operation (flow flashes)

 Continuous flow of oxygen

- emergency purposes (smoke; fume)
- prevent contaminants inside masks
OXYGEN SYSTEM:
STORAGE

Oxygen Cylinders Chemical Oxygen Generators

- Oxygen stored inside high-pressure cylinders - Generates oxygen through chemical reaction

 Simplicity  Heavy  Light weight

 Short duration
 Serviceable  Large space  Less space
 Single use
 Ready to use  Secured  Easy access
