around forty-two percent.
Children’s fundamental rights remain a major challenge in
Ethiopia. Poverty deprives children in their early years of life
to adequate food, clean water, and medicine.

results from the 2000 Ethiopia Demographic and
Health Survey (DHS 2001) indicate roughly that:
one out of every 20 children born alive die in their first month
of life
one out of ten die before reaching their first birthday
one out of six die before reaching their fifth birthday
Introduction

 Location of Shashemene City

 Shashemene city is bordered by Arsi Negelle in the North,
Hawassa in the South, AlabaKulito in the West, and kofale in the
East. Shashemene, the West Arsi Zone Administrative center, is
found 250 km south of Addis Ababa
Background of Walif orphan and street
rehabilitation center

Walif orphan and street rehabilitation center was founded in

2021 as a non-profit community-based organization in
shashemene city of Oromia region. It was started by a team of
dedicated persons with the aim of helping the children who
have no family and those who are their life is on the street. We
run the center in shashemene city, Oromia region.
Background of Walif orphan and
street rehabilitation center
 Walif orphan and street rehabilitation center is able to provide a
small orphanage project that will provide children with a safe and
stable home, education and support throughout their childhood.
This will be a solution of solving the problems hidden by the fact
that orphans and vulnerable children are invisible; yet by the very
nature of their situation, they are included among those that are
classified as disadvantaged and poor in Ethiopia.
Problem of Statement

 As we recognize that the children occupy a very unique and privileged

position in our country society, especially Oromo society has a unique
adaptation culture which is called guddifachaa. Guddifachaa practice
is one of the common cultural practices of child caring, supporting,
and right protection system used by Oromo society. Beyond its
cultural practices among different ethnic groups in Ethiopia,
guddifachaa practice may help resolve childcare problems as a
community based approach of a culture as well as the responding to
children at risk both socially and economically.
Problem of Statement

 From a child’s physical and mental development, they require care

in regard to physical, mental, moral and social development.
 In Ethiopia, the number of people living in poverty (about 45%) is
very large versus the total population and the existing resource
utilization. Because poverty in the country has multiple
dimensions with different social, economic, political, cultural and
environmental factors (Oromia Finance and Economic
Development Bureau (BOFED), 2005
Problem of Statement

 In societies like ours, problems that children face are various in

numbers. The most common ones are child rights violations, child
trafficking, child labor exploitation, child prostitution, street children,
child abuses and neglects, etc. This is because of the country’s limited
resource capacity and misuse of the existing ones. The country needs
an effort in appropriately addressing the problems of children with the
existing socioeconomic resource environment
