Layout is… It is the process
of planning and
the make-up or the arranging in
detail something
window dressing of such as a
a page newspaper to be
reproduced.
Layout is…
balanced makeup.

It is composition or placement of
elements of design, as figures,
forms, or colors, in such a manner
as to produce an aesthetically
pleasing or harmoniously
integrated whole.
TYPES OF LAYOUT
SYMMETRICAL BALANCE
(formal)

It has elements of equal weight on

either side of an imaginary horizontal
or vertical line. It is often considered
a safe solution, but boring layout to
use.
TYPES OF LAYOUT
ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE
(informal)

There is an increase in intensity that

compensates for the change in
position. Intensity can be increased
by changing size, shape, or tone.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

Alignment of elements in the design

is important, whether it be text or
images.
Text/Type: Legible. Use simple font
face. left-justified, right justified or
centered.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

• Images: Big enough. High

resolution. Applies photo rules.
• Captioning: Caption all photos
possible. Add credits.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

REPETITION (Consistency) –
Repeated action, performance,
production, or presentation creates
identity.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

CONTRAST
creates interest by providing variety
in the design.
Size Weight Position Shape Color
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

HARMONY
not competing, no clutter, there
should be one dominant point of
interest.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

EMPHASIS
usually the focal point in a page. It
could be done by varying the size,
the color, shapes or background.
Emphasis is the quality that draws
your attention to a certain part of a
design or layout.
PRINCIPLES of LAYOUT

Eliminate unnecessary details and

use simple background.
“In manner, fashion and style,
simplicity defines ELEGANCE.”

MINIMALIST DESIGN

Don’t make your newspaper

look crowded or too busy. Use
lots of white space where you
can. Newspapers have always
looked crowded in the past,
but modern design tends to
use more white space, thus
giving more importance to the
images and text you do have
on a page.

MINIMALIST DESIGN
To give you an extreme example, imagine an
entire page with only a single word in the
middle: "Desire." That forces all the
attention on that one word and the possible
connotations. That might be extreme, but
the concept of using more white space and
making your newspaper look less crowded
is valid. Put more space between images
and text. Space text out more, and put more
white space between paragraphs, columns,
and other text boxes.

HAVE GOOD COLOR SCHEMES

Don't use too many colors. That just

looks messy. Know what colors go
well together and which ones clash.
On a newspaper, colors will always
print darker than what is on your
computer screen so it is important to
lighten up your colors.

SYMBOLISMS ARE ‘ACCEPTED’

Modern design often employs

‘symbolic’ images. Again, this gives
your paper a fresh take on the layout.

WHITE SPACE IS EVERYTHING

Empty space/white space is as important as

the space you do use. Leaving large holes in
your newspaper design is not wise, but trying
to use all the free space up may not be wise
either. Well positioned empty or white space
can make a newspaper really stand out, look
clean, look fresh, and look elegant.
