What is vesak ?
Vesak is a holy day for Buddhism. In various countries, Vesak Day is also
celebrated, for example, such as Visakah Puja or Buddha Purnima in India,
Saga Dawa in Tibet, Visakha Bucha in Thailand, Vesak in Sri Lanka, Vesak
in Malaysia and Singapore. According to the book Tracing Indonesia's
Ancient History Through Prasasti (2012) written by Boechari, in several
places of celebration, Vesak is also known as Buddha's Day.Vesak Day,
usually celebrated in May every year or to be precise when there is a full
moon. In general, Vesak is used as a national holiday in a number of
countries in Southeast Asia, and Indonesia is no exception.
Vesak is marked as three important events that happened to Gautama Buddha or the Great
Teacher for Buddhists. These three events were marked by the birth of Gautama Buddha
who was on his way to perfect enlightenment and the departure of the Buddha. These
three events became known as the Tri Suci Vesak Day.Every year, Vesak day falls on a
different date, but generally in May or depending on the marking of the Buddhist
calendar or Buddhist Era (BE).There are many series of events carried out by Buddhists
ahead of Vesak Day, for example, such as meditation, worship and almsround. The series
of events, of course, has its own meaning and purpose.
Vesak is a festival celebrated by Buddhists to celebrate Gautama Buddha, the Great
Teacher or Spiritual Teacher around the 5th century BC.Gautama Buddha also
known as Siddhartha Gautama who was born as a teacher and had the thought that
luxury and wealth would not guarantee one's happiness.A brief history of Gautama
Buddha's life, in the end, becomes an important historical value for Buddhists, such
as the birth to perfect enlightenment and the journey of death of Gautama
Buddha.The Buddha has spread Buddhism to all parts of the world, but in every
country, the way of celebration and the time of implementation of this Vesak day is
different.
How do people celebrate vesak day ?
Usually, Buddhists will go to their local temples and some stay in the temples all day until the full moon
arrives. They will also do a lot of good deeds, meditate, meditate on Buddhist teachings, bring offerings to
temples and various foods to other people. Apart from celebrating Vesak with festivals and ceremonies,
Buddhists will usually also perform the Bathing the Buddha ceremony on this day. Vesak This ceremony
commemorates where water flows over the shoulders of the Buddha, its purpose is to remind people to clear
their minds of all negative thoughts, such as hatred or greed.
There are many ways to celebrate the Vesak holiday, depending on each individual. Some of the activities
that are often carried out during the Vesak holiday are meditation, puja, and social activities such as giving
food and assistance to those in need. In addition, Buddhists also often visit Buddhist temples and make
offerings.
Where do buddhists celebrate vesak day
?
Buddhists in each region have different traditions in celebrating Vesak Day.
However, one thing is certain, namely that Vesak celebrations occur in many
Asian countries, such as North Korea, South Korea, India and Thailand.In
Indonesia, Buddhists usually celebrate Vesak Day by holding a Waisak lantern
festival which is usually held at Borobudur Temple, Magelang, Central Java.
