WHAT IS POWER ELECTRONICS?
Power electronics is a branch of electrical engineering
that deals with the conversion, control, and management
of electrical power using electronic devices.

The field of power electronics is concerned with

designing, developing, and controlling circuits and
systems that can efficiently convert electrical power from
one form to another, and deliver it to the load with high
precision and reliability.
POWER ELECTRONICS DEVICES
• Power electronic circuits use devices such as:
• Power diodes
• Transistors
• Thyristors
• Integrated circuits
to control and manipulate electrical power in various forms,
such as AC, DC, and high-frequency signals.
IMPACT OF POWER ELECTRONICS ON
ENVIRONMENT
• Power electronics are a rapidly developing field of technology that can
have a profound impact on the environment and sustainability.

• These devices can be used to manage electrical energy, making them an

important part of the modern infrastructure.

• Therefore, power electronics have both positive and negative impacts on

environment.
ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION:

• Power electronics devices are also used in

electric vehicles, which are becoming
increasingly popular due to their low carbon
emissions.

• They help to convert the DC power stored in

batteries to AC power used by electric
motors, making electric vehicles more
efficient and environmentally friendly.
ENERGY STORAGE:

• Power electronics devices are used in energy

storage systems such as batteries and
supercapacitors, which can store excess energy
from renewable sources for use during peak
demand times.

• This helps to balance the grid and reduce the

need for fossil fuel-based power generation.
RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION:
• Power electronics devices enable the integration of renewable
energy sources, such as wind and solar power, into the electricity
grid.
• This reduces dependence on fossil fuels and lowers carbon
emissions.
• Power electronics have contributed to the development of
renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which are
much cleaner and more sustainable than traditional fossil fuels.
RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION
PRODUCTION AND DISPOSAL OF ELECTRONIC
WASTE
• One of the main concerns is the production
and disposal of electronic waste.
• Power electronics devices such as
computers, smartphones, and other gadgets
contain toxic substances such as lead,
mercury, and cadmium that can leach into
the environment if not disposed of properly.
ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION

• Power electronics can also contribute to

electromagnetic pollution, which can have
negative impacts on both humans and wildlife.

• Electromagnetic radiation emitted by power

electronics can interfere with biological
processes, and can also disrupt communication
and navigation systems in animals.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY

• PROS: • CONS:
• Power electronics devices such as variable • Although power electronics devices are
frequency drives, power inverters, and DC-DC designed to be energy efficient, the sheer
