INTRODUCTION
This lesson will provide you a deeper
knowledge and understanding of your product
and the products of your competitors
entrepreneurs so that you will always strive to
be different and unique. People tend to get
bored or not interested in buying the same
products without innovations. You must know
the strengths and weaknesses of your
products.
WORDS FOR STUDY
Fillers - these are applied on wood to fill
up cracks, holes and grooves.
Shellac - is a kind of varnish that dries up
easily and is not waterproof.
Paint - a finishing material most
commonly used on wood.
Varnish - is a transparent finish material.

Enamel - this is a kind of varnish with


color.
Sandpaper - paper with sand or
another abrasive stuck to it,
used for smoothing or
polishing woodwork or
other surfaces.
Finishing Materials That Are Commonly
Used in Decorating Bamboo, Wood and
Metal Products

1. Filler- these are applied on wood to


fill up cracks, holes, and
grooves.
2 Kinds of Wood Fillers
a. Paste Filler- It comes from silex, raw linseed oil, and
turpentine. It has colors such as natural,
red, or golden oak. White paste filler are
used to fill in big cracks and grooves or
wood.
this is a kind of varnish that dries
up easily and is not waterproof. It
b. Shellac- comes from lac gum diluted in
alcohol. Shellac is available in
white or orange color.
Lac Gum - The resinous secretion produced by lac insects
Lac is the resinous secretion of a number
of species of lac insects
(silkworms, bees, and the lac insect
(Laccifer lacca). The latter secretes a
sticky, resinous material called lac, from
which shellac and a red dye are produced)

2. Stains
The common wood stains used are
oil stain, water stain and spirit stain
which are named after the solvent
used. Stains are sold in different colors
and shades. The easiest to apply on
wood is oil stain. The hardest one to
apply s the spirit stain because it dries
up easily.
3. Paint- a finishing material most
commonly used on wood.
Paint prevents moisture on the
wood which causes decay.
Paint beautifies wooden
objects and makes them easy
to clean.
4. Varnish-
this is a transparent finishing
material that comes from
gum, linseed oil, and resin.
It is hard and shiny when
dry and gives sheen to the
wooden project. Varnish is
widely used I furniture and
upholstery making.
