ACTIVITY 1

One Sunday morning, Antonina heard her parents talking about how they can augment
their income since they cannot sell their product because of the pandemic. Her parents
sell fabrics in the tianggihan. Upon hearing about the family’s problem, an idea came
into her mind.

Mother, father, I think we can do something about

it. Since you cannot sell fabrics in the tianggihan
these days why not make bedsheets, pillowcase,
table runners and others out of the fabric we sell.
We have learned in our TLE subject how to sew
different linens how to come up with the costing of
the product, how to make record keeping, how to
do the packaging and how to sell these products
in different ways.

So when are

DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY

Marketing Finished Household Linens in Varied/ Creative Ways

Marketing is the process or technique of promoting,

selling, and distributing a product or service. There are
three market methods for finished products: packaging
and labelling, costing and pricing, and advertising.

Packaging and Labeling

Packaging. This is to protect the product from physical damage, dirt and moisture during
handling. Packaging materials are made out of paper, plastic, cardboard or local fibers
like sinamay.

Labeling. It is very important to inform buyers of the

product features, the measurements, materials used, the cost or price and the
manufacturers.

Packaging suggestions for the pillowcase:

*Transparent packaging such as cellophane

* Boxed set

*Native bags

Costing and Pricing

The basic rules for costing and pricing are

the following:

1. The total cost of materials used or everything used to make a product.

2. Overhead expenses is the cost incurred for labor and utilities like transportation,
electricity and equipment maintenance

3. Markup is the amount added to the cost of product to determine the profit.

4
There are steps in costing and pricing

1. Make a list of the total cost of materials to complete the product.

Here is an example for making a pillowcase:

fabric (1 yard)--------------P40.00

thread----------- + P10.00

total cost of material--------------P50.00

2. Add overhead expenses (labor and utilities) to get the total cost.

total cost of material--------------P50.00

labor and utilities----------- + P10.00

total cost of production--------------P60.00

3. Determine the markup percentage (seller’s choice) to be used to get the selling price.
In the example, the markup percentage used is 25%. That is, P60.00 X 0.25 = P15.00

total cost of production---------------P60.00

markup------------ + P15.00

selling price-----------P75.00

4. To get the net profit, deduct total cost from selling price.

selling price---------------P75.00

less total cost------------ - P60.00

net profit-------------- P15.00

Advertising. Aside from offering your products to your relatives, neighbors, friends, and
schoolmates, joining school fairs and

bazaars, you can offer your products to a wider

public through the use of technology. Advertise

your products through the use of social media,

e-mail, text messages, blogs, telephone, mobile phones, or fax machines.
