Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local

L E S S ON
The Principles of 5S
The Principles of 5S were developed in Japan and stand for the
Japanese-words-seiri (sort), seiton (Straighten), seiso (sweep), sieketsu
(standardize), and shitsuke (sustain).

These can be applied to any place-work- or home- if you are looking to

set a strong basis for productivity.
The five S are:

1. Sort (Seiri) – It is the first step in 5S. it refers to the sorting of the
clutter from the other items within the work area that are actually
needed.
a. Remove wastes and unnecessary items and dispose them properly.
b. Make work easier by eliminating obstacles.
c. Reduce the chance of being disturbed with unnecessary items.
d. Prevent accumulation of unnecessary items.
e. Evaluate necessary items with regard to cost or another factor.
f. Remove all the items that are not in use.
g. Segregate unwanted materials from the workplace.
h. Do not put unnecessary items in the workplace and define a red-
tagged area to keep those unnecessary items.

2. Straighten (Seiton) – It is the process of taking the required items that

are remaining after the removal of clutter and arranging them in an
efficient manner through the use of ergonomic principles and ensuring
that every item “has a place and that everything is in it place.”
a. Arrange all necessary items so that they can be easily selected for
use.
b. Prevent loss and waste of time.
c. Make it easily to find and pick up necessary items.
d. Ensure the first-come-first-served basis.
e. Make workflow smooth and easy.
f. Above all work should be done on a regular basis.

3. Sweep (Seiso) – it is the thorough cleaning of the area, tools, machines,

and other equipment to ensure that everything is returned to a “nearly
new status.
a. Clean your workplace completely.
b. Use cleaning as inspection. Prevent machinery and equipment
deterioration.
c. Keep workplace safe and easy to work in.
d. Keep workplace clean and pleasing to work in.
4. Standardize (Seiketsu) – It is the process of ensuring that the three
stage of 5S become standardized; that there are common standards and
ways of working.
a. Standardize the best practices in the work area.
b. Maintain high standards and workplace organization at all times.
c. Maintain orderliness. Maintain everything in order and according to
its standard.
d. Put everything in its right place.
e. Make sure that every process has a standard.

5. Sustain (Shitsuke) – it is the fifth and final step of the 5S method. It

means “sustain” or “sustained discipline.” Shitsuke is a japaneses word
that carries a wealth of cultural meaning.
a. Keep working in order.
b. It also translates as “do without being told.”
c. Perform regular audits.
d. Continue training and discipline. Training is a gold-oriented process.
Its resulting feedback is necessary monthly.
