Quarter 3– Module 15: Principles of 5S

Before we study further, let’s recall our previous lesson about fixing
the broken table leg.
Direction: Arrange the jumbled steps in repairing broken chair.
❖ Either replace the broken part of the chair or transfer where to
fasten.

❖ To fasten the part or parts thoroughly, place a brace to support
the loosen part.

The Principles of 5S
The Principles of 5S were developed in Japan and stand for the
Japanese-words-seiri (sort), seiton (Straighten), seiso (sweep), sieketsu
(standardize), and shitsuke (sustain).
1. Sort (Seiri) – It is the first step in 5S. it refers to the sorting of the
clutter from the other items within the work area that are actually
needed.
a. Remove wastes and unnecessary items and dispose them properly.
b. Make work easier by eliminating obstacles.
c. Reduce the chance of being disturbed with unnecessary items.
d. Prevent accumulation of unnecessary items.
e. Evaluate necessary items with regard to cost or another factor.
f. Remove all the items that are not in use.
g. Segregate unwanted materials from the workplace.
h. Do not put unnecessary items in the workplace and define a red-
tagged area to keep those unnecessary items.
