INTRODUCTIO
N

• Welcome to the presentation on

Colligative Properties.

• Colligative properties are properties

of solutions that depend on the
number of solute particles, rather
than their nature.

• In this presentation, we will explore

the different colligative properties
and their significance.

• Colligative properties are properties of a solvent that change
when a solute is added.

• These properties include vapor pressure lowering, boiling

point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic
pressure.

LOWERING
• When a non-volatile solute is added to a solvent, the vapor
pressure of the solvent decreases.
• This occurs because the solute particles occupy the surface of
the solvent, reducing the number of solvent molecules
escaping into the vapor phase.
• Raoult's law describes the relationship between the vapor
pressure of a solvent and the mole fraction of the solvent in
the solution
BOILING POINT
• The boiling point of a solvent increases when a non-volatile solute is added.

• The presence of solute particles reduces the tendency of solvent molecules to escape
E L E VAT I O N into the vapor phase, requiring a higher temperature to reach the boiling point.

• The elevation in boiling point is directly proportional to the molality of the solute and
the boiling point elevation constant of the solvent.
FREEZING POINT • The freezing point of a solvent decreases when a non-volatile solute is added.

• The presence of solute particles disrupts the orderly arrangement of solvent

DEPRESSION molecules, making it harder for them to form a solid lattice.

• The depression in freezing point is directly proportional to the molality of the

solute and the freezing point depression constant of the solvent.
• Osmotic pressure is the
pressure required to stop the
flow of solvent across a
semi-permeable membrane.
• It is a colligative property
that depends on the
concentration of solute
particles in the solution.
• Osmosis is the process by
which solvent molecules
move from an area of lower
solute concentration to an
area of higher solute
concentration.

• Colligative properties find numerous applications in various
fields, including:
• Antifreeze in automobiles (freezing point depression).
• Food preservation (osmotic pressure).
• Determining molecular weight of unknown substances
(vapor pressure lowering, osmotic pressure).
• Pharmaceutical formulations (boiling point elevation,
osmotic pressure).

PROP ERTIES
• The colligative properties are
influenced by the number of solute
particles, irrespective of their
chemical identity.

• Temperature, pressure, and nature of

the solvent can also impact the
colligative properties.

• Van't Hoff factor accounts for the

number of particles a solute
dissociates into in a solution and
affects colligative properties
accordingly.

• Colligative properties assume ideal behavior, which may not
always be accurate in real-life scenarios.
• Electrolytes that dissociate in solution can deviate from
colligative property predictions due to ion pairing or
association.
• High solute concentrations and strong solute-solvent
interactions may also affect the accuracy of colligative
property calculations.
SUMMARY
• Colligative properties are dependent on the number of solute particles in a solution.

• Vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic
pressure are the main colligative properties.

• Understanding colligative properties is crucial in various applications and fields of

study.
CONCLUSION • Colligative properties provide a valuable framework for understanding
solution behavior.
• By exploring these properties, scientists and engineers can make
predictions, design processes, and develop innovative solutions.
• Thank you for attending this presentation on Colligative Properties.
