What are chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process that results in the chemical

change of one set of chemical substances into another set
of chemical substances.

There are numerous chemical changes that we can notice

in our environment. The rusting of iron is an example of a
chemical reaction that we commonly experience in our
homes.
What is Rust?

Rust is an iron oxide, a usually reddish-brown oxide formed

by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the catalytic presence
of water or air moisture.

Rusting

Rusting is an oxidation reaction. The iron reacts with water

and oxygen to form hydrated iron(III) oxide, which we see as
rust.

Corrosion
Corrosion is when a refined metal is naturally converted to a
more stable form such as its oxide, hydroxide or sulphide
state this leads to deterioration of the material.
When iron and steel come into touch with water
and oxygen (all of which are required for rusting to
occur), they rust. An example of rusting that I have
found in our house is this old motorbike’s fuel
tank.

Rusting causes iron to become flaky and weak,

degrading its strength, appearance and
permeability. Rusted iron does not hold the
desirable properties of iron. The rusting of iron
can lead to damage to automobiles, railings, grills,
and many other iron structures.
Harmful Effects of Rusting to Human and
Environment.

Rust is non-toxic and so presents no biological

hazards. The main environmental impacts of
rust is the degradation of steel and iron
structures, such as bridges, automobiles, etc.

In addition to our everyday encounters with

this form of degradation, corrosion
causes plant shutdowns, waste of valuable
resources, loss or contamination of product,
reduction in efficiency, costly maintenance,
and expensive overdesign. It can also
jeopardize safety and inhibit technological
progress.
Is Rust Harmful To Our Body?

Rust isn't inherently harmful to human beings. In

particular, touching rust or getting it on your skin isn't
associated with any health risks but you can get
tetanus from a wound caused by a rusty object,
it's not the rust that causes tetanus. Instead, it's
caused by a type of bacteria that may be on the
object.

What Causes Tetanus?

Tetanus is an infection caused by a bacterium

called Clostridium tetani. Spores of tetanus
bacteria are everywhere in the environment,
including soil, dust, and manure. The spores
develop into bacteria when they enter the body.
