TYPES OF
ELECTRICAL
WIRING DEVICES
WIRING DEVICES
are defined as single discrete units of electrical
distribution systems which are intended to carry
but not utilize electric energy. Wiring devices are
electrical devices used to control and to provide
connection points for low voltage outlets, lighting
systems and appliances.

WIRE OUTLET
• According to the National Electrical Code
(NEC), a device is a unit of an electrical
system that is intended to carry, not to
utilize electric energy. This covers a wide
assortment of system components that
include, but not limited to the following:
• Switches
• Relays
• Contactors
• Conductors
• Fuses and Circuit Breakers
• Outlets (Floor Outlet, Grounding type Convenience Outlet or
otherwise known as Special Purpose Outlet or SPO
SWITCHES
• These are electrical component
that can disconnect or connect
the conducting path in an
electrical circuit, interrupting
the electric current or
diverting it from one
conductor to another.
RELAYS
• Relays are switching devices
used in any control circuit for
checking a condition or
multiplying the number of
contacts available. A relay
consists of at least two contacts
and an excitation coil.
CONTACTORS
• A Contactor is used for
switching of motors,
capacitors, lights etc, that
drains very high current. It
has at least a single pair of
three-phase input and output
contacts. It would be normally
open.
CONDUCTORS
• Conductors are materials that
permit electrons to flow freely
from particle to particle. An
object made of a conducting
material will permit charge to
be transferred across the entire
surface of the object.
FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS
• Fuse is a safety device
consisting of a strip of
wire that melts and
breaks an electric circuit
if the current exceeds a
safe level.
• A circuit breaker is an
automatically operated electrical
switch designed to protect an
electrical circuit from damage
caused by excess current from an
overload or short circuit. Its basic
function is to interrupt current
flow after a fault is detected.
CONVENIENCE OUTLET (CO)
AND SPECIAL PURPOSE OUTLET
(SPO)
• Convenience outlet (CO) is
a receptacle in a wall or
baseboard for connection to
lamps or other electrical
appliances.
• Special Purpose Outlet
(SPO) is a receptacle in a
wall or baseboard for
connection to power tools
and similar portable power
tools and equipment.
