z INTRODUCTION
Broad field curriculum design is
generally considered to be expanded
version of the idea of fusion. In this
approach, two, three or more
subjects are unified into one broad-
course of study. This organization is
actually a system of combining and
regrouping subjects that are related
in the curriculum into separate broad
fields of study.
BROAD FIELD CURRICULUM
z

 It is also called
INTEGRATED or FUSED
CURRICULUM.
 A number of subjects
related to academic level
are attached under a
single concept and are
taught in a specific name.
This is known as Broad
field curriculum.
EXAMPLES:

Economics, Sociology, History,

Geography are mingled together and
form a new name as “ SOCIAL
SCIENCE”.
z

Zoology, Botany, Anatomy, Evolution,

Genetics are mingled together and it
comes under a single branch name as
“BIOLOGY”
z
OBJECTIVES OF BROAD FIELD CURRICULUM

z
 In this curriculum, the boundaries between
the individual subject will disappear.
 It considers the aim of different types of
subjects into a common aim.
 It makes the student to understand the
general views of various subjects.
 It co-ordinates the learning experience of the
students.
 It develops the integrated learning skills
among the students.
STRUCTURE OF BROAD FIELD CURRICULUM
z

 Broad field curriculum is structured into two

types:
 1.Based on interrelated disciplines.

 In education physics and chemistry are

taught under the subject “Physical Science”
and Botany and Zoology are taught under
the subject “bio-science”.These are grouped
by broad field curriculum
 2.Based on various departments
z
 The subject combined together do not
relate with each other and they need to
be handled separately.
 Biology + Statistics = biostatistics

 Biology + Technology = biotechnology

 Likewise unrelated subjects or units are

combined together and teach together
as a single subject is another category
of broad field curriculum.
z
ADVANTAGES OF BROAD FIELD CURRICULUM
z
 Students are able to learn the various field
knowledge’s from the single subject.
 It helps to develop the knowledge excellence of
students.
 It helps to learn the benefits and sugnificance of
other subjects.
 It gives knowledge to the students about how various
subjects are inter-related to each other.
z
 It helps to learn the basic concepts of other different
subjects.
 Ith develops the ability to relate, with the reasoning
ability, distinguishing ability etc.
 It becomes useful by developing the integrated
learning skills among the students.
 It, not only provides a specific subject knowledge but
also gives knowledge on various unrelated subjects
too.
DISADVANTAGES OF BROAD FIELD CURRICULUM
z

 Learning the other different subjects will only ,

give a shallow knowledge about themselves.
 It is difficult and complicated one to obtain the
deep knowledge on a particular field. It is
impossible to give space for a specific
knowledge when a number of fields are
taught together.
 It , different fields which are unwilling to the
learners are taught at a time, it becomes a
drawback in learning.
z
NEEDz FOR CURRICULUM INTEGRATION
 The purpose of integrated curriculum is
to coordinate the subjects and the
students in the process of learning. It
creates the learning experience of
different subjects and the life
experiences of the subjects and
combine all things together to create the
learning environment.
z
 Integrated curriculum is useful for various levels for all:

 1.Learning Skills improvement.

 * As student learn about various subjects, it enhance their

ability to relate them together. Thus, this curriculum develops
the learning skills of the students.
 2.Increase the management efficiency.

 * Integrated curriculum promotes the management skills of

the students. Knowledge on various subjects increases the
efficiency of management of the learners.
z
 3.Developing creative thinking.
 * The purpose of providing wide range of knowledge is
to develop the creative ideas of the students. Thus, this
curriculum plays an important role to promote the
creative thinking of the students.
 4.Students role in learning

 * Integrated curriculum is also meant to involve the

activities of the students, this while the process of
learning, the involvement of the students, becomes
necessary in the curriculum.
z

 5.Increase in researching/exploring
ability
 * This curriculum is an effective means
to develop the researching ability of an
individual by acquiring the various field
knowledge, students can enhance their
exploring ability.
z
CONCLUSION
 A broad field curriculum is a structure for achieving
educational outcomes that combines related subjects
into broad field of study. Integrated curriculum helps to
obtain various subject/field knowledge for the students
on acquiring the different field knowledge, can growth
the intellectual skill of the learners. Integrated
curriculum is an effective way to develop the creative
thinking of the students.
