Activities of
Power Transformers

 Placement
The following activities can be carried out
parallelly.
 Placement of main tank on foundation

 Prepare the oil in a separate oil tank till the

oil reaches BDV>50KV & PPM<50
 Shifting of transformer accessories (loose
material) near to foundation , check for
physical damage, cleanliness, checking of
turret and bushing C.Ts
 Initial Filling
 Fill the oil into main tank under vaccum
 Leave for one day to make the winding
wet
 Erection of LV Bushings & Torrets

 Drain the oil upto 300mm(app.) from

transformer tank top
 Check for IR value of the core
 Erect the LV bushings and connect the leads
 Erect the turrets
 Do the alignment of L.V. turrets with
Busduct & anchor the wheels
 Erection of HV Turret & Bushing
 Further drain the oil from transformer tank
 Untie the HV lead , erect the HV Turret
 Erect the HV bushing & connect the leads
 During the above process pass dry
air/nitrogen to avoid ingress of moisture
 Erect the conservator tank & associated pipe
lines
 Check for core IR value
 Keep The Tank Under Vaccum

 Start vaccuming the tank till it reaches 1

torr
 Keep it under observation for 24 hrs
 Check for leaks if any
 Drying out

 Fill the transformer with filtered oil under

vaccum and circulate the oil
 Monitor the temperature, oil BDV, IR value of
the winding on an hourly basis (plot the V-
curve)
 Continue till oil BDV reaches 70KV, 10 PPM
 Parallelly radiator tank erection & associated
tank erection can be carried out
 Filling of Conservator tank
& Radiator Bank
 Open the valves of radiator bank
 Open the valves connected to conservator tank and
top up with filtered oil upto the required level
 During initial filling of the conservator tank ,
pressurise the air bag upto 0.1 to 0.2 KSC with dry air
 Circulate the oil through filtering machine till the
required BDV & PPM are achieved
 Pre Commissioning Checks
 Check for correctness & healthiness of control
wiring, cabling, CT connections etc.,
 Functional tests to be carried out on

1. Fans &
Pumps
2. Bucholtz relay
3. PRV
4. WTI & OTI
5. MOG
6. Flow
 Pre Commissioning Checks Contd..

 Earthing of neutral, main tank, core etc., to

be checked
 Checking of CT’s --- IR, Polarity, Ratio test
 Ratio tests on all taps
 Magnetising current test
 Capacitance & Tanδ measurement of
winding & bushing
 Magnetic balance test

 Percentage impedance measurement

 Vector group test

 IR value of HV & LV windings

 Measurement of oil BDV, PPM, DGA.

 Transformer on No Load
 Keep the transformer on no load for 24 hrs
 Observe the voltage, no load current,
temperature rise, noise etc.,
 Gradually load the transformer
