WHAT IS MICROWAVE ENGINEERING?
Microwave can bee defined as a high energy Radio wave
that ranges from a frequency of 1GHz(10^9Hz) to
1000GHz. It is a line-of-sight wireless communication
technology that is used to transfer information from one
point to another.
Microwave Engineering can be defined as the study and
the design of microwave circuits, components and system
used in communication technology.
MICROWAVE ENGINEER
A Microwave Engineer can be defined as electronic
engineers that deal with the design, manufacture, test and
installation of microwave devices. Microwave engineers
study in depth microwave circuits, components and systems
used in communication technology.
Apart from the design of microwave devices and
components, microwave engineers are also in charge of the
evaluation of existing microwave devices, recommending
improvement or upgrades, troubleshoot problems and repair
faults found in such devices.
DESIGN OF MICROWAVE DEVICES
The design of microwave devices and components is
usually carried out by the microwave engineer to meet a
particular performance standard requested by a client.
Microwave communication technology mainly consists of
the following components
1. Transmitter
2. Receiver
3. Transmission lines
4. Antennas
DESIGN OF MICROWAVE DEVICES

Microwave Engineer usually starts by meeting the clients

to determine the type and performance standard of the
product they desire. The microwave engineer then works
with computer programs to model and layout circuits or
component design for the product after which, he/she tests
and evaluates the model’s performance against existing
standards.

MANUFACTURE OF MICROWAVE DEVICES

Once the design of the microwave devices have been

successfully tested, the microwave engineer monitors the
engineering and manufacturing staff to ensure that the final
product is up to standard.
The microwave engineer notifies them of the type, rating,
frequency and other important specifications of the
Transmitter, Receiver and Antennas, which he/she had used
in the model during the design process.
INSTALLATION OF MICROWAVE DEVICES

Steps involved before Installation:

1. Determining the route of transmission: Hilly areas
should be taken priority when selecting the route of
transmission and making sure that Flat and wide area
and water surfaces are avoided. The line of transmission
should also avoid passing through mountain.
2. Selecting the site of the microwave station: The
distance between two sites of transmission should not be
too long and the distance between relay section be equal.
INSTALLATION OF MICROWAVE DEVICES
3. Drawing the cross-sectional chart of terrain: The
antenna height and transmission situation of each site
should be calculated.
4. Parameters of site construction should be calculated:
Since the site location and route of transmission have
been determined, next is to calculate the elevation angles
of the antenna, distance between sites, free space
transmission loss & received level, rain fading index,
line interruption probability etc.

IMPORTANCE OF MICROWAVE
ENGINEERING IN COMMUNICATION
1. Daily Communication: It is used in our day to day
wireless communication as in the case of cell phones,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc.
2. Large Bandwidth: Microwaves have lager bandwidths
compared to low frequency radio wave and can therefore
transfer more information.
3. Low Power Consumption: Microwave communication
consume low power as the signals are of higher
frequency.
IMPORTANCE OF MICROWAVE
ENGINEERING IN COMMUNICATION

4. Reduced Effect of Fading: Line of sight transmission

drastically reduces the effect of fading during
transmission of information.
5. Satellite and Spacecraft Communication: High
capacity Communication between space crafts and space
stations is possible due to microwave communication
technology.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Microwave Engineering which

involves the study, the design, the manufacture and
installation of microwave devices and components is
a core part of communication technology today.
