A. Introduction to Horticultural Crops

• Horticulture focuses on the traditionally


grown-garden crops

• 3 areas in horticulture: pomology, olericulture


and ornamental

• Horticulture includes planting, harvesting,


storing, processing, and marketing 
Examples of Horticultural Crops
• Olericulture: Tomato, okra, brinjal, chillies
• Pomology: mango, banana, papaya, pineapple
• Floriculture: orchid, carnation, hibiscus
How important is horticulture?

erosion, slow water runoff, absorb
pollutants, control dust, and provide
wildlife habitat
