What is Classroom
Management?

It is a term teachers use to describe the


process of ensuring that classroom lessons
run smoothly without disruptive behavior
from students compromising the delivery of
instruction.
According to Moskowitz & Hayman (1976),
once a teacher loses control of their
classroom, it becomes increasingly more
difficult for them to regain that control.
Why Need for Classroom
Management?
1. Classroom management is crucial in classrooms
because it supports the proper execution of
curriculum development.
2. Classroom management helps in developing best
teaching practices, and putting them into action.
3. Classroom management is closely linked to
issues of motivation, discipline and respect. A
large part of traditional classroom management
involves behavior modification.

In the Handbook of Classroom Management:
Research Practice and Contemporary Issues
(20060, Evertson and Weinstein characterize
classroom management as the actions taken
to create an environment that supports and
facilitates academic and socio-emotional
learning.
Toward this goal, teachers must:
Develop caring, supportive relationships
with and among students
Organize and implement instruction in
ways that optimize students’ access to
learning
Use group management methods that
encourage students’ engagement in
academic tasks
Promote the development of students’
social skills and self-regulation
Use appropriate interventions to assists
students with behavior problem.
As Time Management

The goal of classroom management, to


Kauchak and Eggen, is to not only maintain
order but to optimize student learning.
They divide class time into four overlapping
categorize, namely allocated time,
instructional time, engaged time and
academic learning time
1. Allocated Time – is the total time
allotted for teaching, learning, routine classroom
procedures, checking attendance, and posting or
delivering announcements.
2. Instructional Time – it is what remains after
routine classroom procedures are completed. That
is to say, instructional time is the time wherein
teaching and learning actually takes place.
3. Engaged Time- also called time on task.

4. Academic Learning Time- it occur when


students (1) participate actively and (2) are
successful in learning activities. Effective
classroom management maximizes academic
learning time.
Common Mistakes
Two students with similar looking misbehavior
may require entirely different intervention
strategies if the behaviors are serving different
functions.
Teachers need to learn to be flexible. Another
common mistake is for the teacher to become
increasingly frustrated and negative when an
approach is not working.
The teacher may raise his or her voice or increase
adverse consequences in an effort to make the
approach work.

Inconsistency in expectations and consequences is an


additional mistake that can lead to dysfunction in the
classroom.

“Ignoring and approving” is an effective classroom


strategy.
Conclusion
Therefore principles and concepts like behavior
management, behavior engineering, child development and
child psychology are to be optimally used for effectively
managing the classroom.
Effective classroom management involves a lot of patience,
good timing and implementing appropriate boundaries.
There’s nothing easy about trying to get a group of young
people to remain in control of their impulses. But promoting
these rules and boundaries can give children the right
temperament to success in school and their future careers.
