ABSTRACT
• This project is intended to illustrate the structural design of a
veterinary hospital .
• Taking details with using Auto CAD and STAAD pro.
• Manually calculating using limit state method of design and
SI units conform to IS .456 – 2000.
• It incorporates the design of slabs, beams, columns ,stairs and
column footings of different types.

• In this project, it is particularly taken a veterinary hospital of size

• 20mX 21m including RRC Slab,Beams,Column,Footing and staircase.

• Loads taken for design is as per IS 875-(1987).

• This design will give a good exercise for beginners in the field of design in
understanding the design principles and practices and the using of software
Auto CAD and STAAD pro.

In this paper, ETABS software was used for analysis and design purpose
mainly for the result of shear force and maximum bending moment. RCC
detailing is of most important concern for clear understanding and also in
executing the reinforcement work without any difficulty.

An apartment building is analyzed and designed in this paper. The modeling
and analysis of the structure is done by using STAAD. Pro 2007, and the
designing was done manually. Design of beam, column, slab, shear wall, stair
case, retaining wall, water tank and an isolated footing are done. And the detailing
is done using AUTOCAD 2016.

DESIGN OF SLAB
DESIGN OF ONE WAY 6.2 X 3 m SLAB
Type of Slab
Ly/lx = 6.2/3 = 2.07 >2 (Long span / Short span >2)
Hence the slab is to be designed as one way slab.
Effective and Overall depth (d & D)
Effective depth, d=span /( Modification Factor X Basic Value)=3000/(28)=108 = 110 mm
Overall depth ,D= 110 + 20 + 8/2 =140 mm

EFFECTIVE SPAN (LE)

Min of : (IS 456-2000 cl.22.2)
a) Clear span +Effective depth = lx+d=3000+110 =3110mm
b) Thickness of support/2 + Clear span + thickness of Support/2 =3000+200 = 3200 mm
Therefore, Le = 3110 mm

ULTIMATE LOAD (WU)
W= sum of
a) Self weight of slab = Specific. Weight x length x breadth x overall depth
= 25x1x1x0.140 =3.5kN/m
b)Floor finish = 1KN/m
c)Live load =3kN/m
Wu =1.5x(3+1+3.5) =11.25kN/m

BENDING MOMENT & SHEAR FORCE

Bending moment,Mu= (wu x lx^2)/8 = 11.25 x (3.11^2)/8 = 13.6 kNm
Shear force,Vu = ( wu x lx ) / 2 = 17.49 kN
Check for Effective depth required (dreq)
Mu = 0.133fckbd^2
Effective depth required,d req = 71.503 =75 mm <dcal
Hence provided depth is sufficient.

TENSION REINFORCEMENT (AST)
Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d (1- fy Ast / fck bd) (IS 456-2000 cl.G.1.1)
Ast = 305.42 mm^2
Ast min = 0.12% of gross area =168 mm^2
Ast min< Ast. Hence, the Tensile Reinforcement provided is sufficient.
Provide 8 mm dia bars
Spacing = (Ast ind / Ast pro ) x 1000=144.57 =150 mm
Distribution reinforcement same as Ast min = 168mm^2 @ spacing of 150 mm c/c.
CHECK FOR SHEAR
v < c (IS 456-2000 cl.40.1)

Permissible shear,c
Pt = (100 x Ast / bd)= (100x 305.42/1000x 110) =0.277
c = 0.372 N/mm^2
0.159<0.372, its safe against shear
18-06-2022 27
CHECK FOR DEFLECTION
(l/d)cal< (l/d)pro (IS 456-2000 cl.23.2)
(l/d)cal = 3110/110 = 28.27
Percentage of steel ,Pt =0.277
Fs = 0.58 x fy =0.58 x 500 = 290 N/mm^2
Modification Factor (IS 456-2000 Fig 4) = 1.5
Then, (l/d)pro = M.F X 20 = 1.5 X 20 = 30
28.27<30, hence its safe against deflection.

DESIGN OF BEAM
• A beam is a structural member subjected to transverse loading system. The
transverse load which are perpendicular to the axis of beam include shear
force and bending moment in the beam. This is in turn to produce shear
stress and bending stress in its cross section.

• Calculation of design of beams B1,B2,B3 are safe against deflection.
