What is
tourism ?
 Tourism is the travel for
recreational (rest),family
or business purposes
usually of a limited
duration.
        Environment

Environment means anything
that surrounds us. It can be living
(biotic) or non-living (abiotic)
things. It includes physical,
chemical and other natural forces.
Living things live in their
environment. They constantly
interact with it and adapt
themselves to conditions in their
environment. .
Effect Of
Tourism
TOURISM HAS BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE
IMPACTS ON COMMUNITIES. THE ECONOMIC
EFFECTS OF TOURISM INCLUDE IMPROVED
TAX REVENUE, PERSONAL INCOME,
INCREASED STANDARDS OF LIVING, AND
MORE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF
TOURISM
•The quality of the environment, both natural and
man-made, is essential to tourism.

•The negative impacts of tourism development can

gradually destroy the environmental resources on
which it depends.

•Negative impacts from tourism occur when the

level of visitor use is greater than the
environment's ability to cope with this use
within the acceptable limits of change.
Water Resources

The tourism industry generally overuses water

resources for hotels, swimming pools, golf
courses and personal use of water by tourists.
This can result in water shortages and
degradation of water supplies, as well as
generating a greater volume of waste water.
• POLLUTION
• Tourism can cause the same forms of pollution as
any other industry
• Air emissions
• Noise
• Solid waste and littering
• Releases of sewage
• Oil and chemicals
• Even architectural/visual pollution
how we can protect our
environment

 • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw

away. ...
 • Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. ... •
 •  Educate. ...
 • Conserve water. ...
 • Choose sustainable. ...
 • Shop wisely. ...
 • Use long-lasting light bulbs. ...
 • Plant a tree.
Social Cultural Impacts
• Culture practices of a society
• Tourism can positively effect
• More money for a community
• Improves standard of living and
education
• bring people together peace, new
tastes
• increases critical mass (trinkets!)
• Can preserve historical/natural sites
Summary
 In practical terms, this may well be the most important area of research on the interactions
between tourism and environment. Although the significance of this approach is determined by the
natural sciences and propounded by conservation ecologists, the key research questions related to
human behavior and dynamics of human social institutions and these questions thus required
social science skills.
