Adaptations

This presentation contains adaptations of :

Camel
Elephant
Cactus
Pelican
Organism Adaptation How does it help?

Elephants' massive
size is a great anti-
predator adaptation.
E SIZE

L Elephants live in hot conditions and need to be

able to cool themselves down. Since they're

E unable to sweat, they've adapted another

solution. They flap their large ears to help
cool the blood in their capillaries and
P LARGE
EARS
distribute the cooler blood through their
bodies as they do not have sweat glands. This
H process can lower their blood temperature by
more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
A TRUNK helps elephants to reach food high up in
N TRUNK
branches and to get to food and water on the
ground, which they otherwise wouldn't be able to
T access. Additionally, they use their trunks to make
calls and other sounds to communicate with one
another and warn their herd about any potential
threats.
Adaptations of Pelican
• Pelicans have enormous pouched bills that they can expand to scoop fish up out of
the ocean or other body of water.
• The pouch has many blood vessels. On a hot day opening the beak is a good way to
cool down.
• Outer nostrils sealed with horny skin prevents water from entering during dive.
• Pouch pleats allow for great expansion during hunting.
• Lower jaw bones have low mineral content allowing bending when the pouch is full
of water.
