INTRODUCTION
Your Name A critical evaluation of a text that involves writing is
about the quality and value of something, such as a
book, article, magazine, movie, sport events,
restaurant, product and many more. Formulating an
evaluative critical response has two missions: To
summarize the source’s main idea and to respond to
the source’s main topics with reactions based on
your understanding, analysis and synthesis.

• Identify the author’s thesis statement (main point)
and purpose.
• Analyze the structure of the passage by identifying
all main ideas.
• Consult the dictionary or encyclopedia to
understand material that is unfamiliar to you.
• Make an outline of the work or write the
description of it.

o To inform with factual materials
o To persuade with appeal to reason or
emotions

a. If the purpose is to inform, has the material been
presented clearly and accurate, with order and
coherence?
b. If the purpose is to persuade, look for evidence,
logical reasoning , contrary to the evidence.
c. If the purpose is to entertain, determine how emotions
are affected: does it make you laugh? Cry? Angry? Why
did it affect you?

o What are the writer’s assumptions about the audience?
o What kind of language and imagery does the author
use?
o What is meant by evaluation and judgement?

o Are the authors acknowledged experts in

o Is the subject controversial?
o Does the author use emotive language?
o What is the purpose of the author by writing
the subject?
o In different views on the subject area, does
the author consequently fall into one side?

o Are the methodology and sources of data used clearly
identified or explained? What evidences are presented
to support the ideas and conclusions expressed?
o Is the methodology direct or indirect? Are the
assumptions of the author consistent, logical and
justified?
o Does the research raise any unanswered questions?

Your Name The purpose of critical analysis is not merely to
inform, but also to evaluate the worth, utility,
excellence, distinction, truth, validity, beauty, or
goodness of something.
As writer, you figure out the strengths and
weaknesses of the text, but also an understanding of
the text’s purpose, the intended audience and why it is
structured the way it was written based on the specific
criteria.

Your Name You can express your opinions, but you should also
back them up with evidence. Your review should provide
information, interpretation, and evaluation. The
information will help your reader/audience understand the
nature of the work under analysis. The interpretation will
explain the meaning of the work, therefore requiring your
correct understanding of it. The evaluation will discuss
your opinion of the work and present valid justification
for them
