This document provides an outline for a lecture on health, safety, and the environment. It discusses several types of industrial waste including solid waste generated from manufacturing processes. It also covers industrial effluents that can pollute water sources and the importance of waste treatment, including treating both solid and liquid waste. The document discusses noise pollution and its negative health effects such as increased stress, anxiety, and irritability. It concludes with several remedial measures that can be taken to reduce noise pollution, including controlling noise at its source, acoustic zoning, and legislative measures.

NUST COLLEGE OF E&ME Industrial Waste • Industrial waste is an all-encompassing term used to describe material considered to be no longer of use after a manufacturing process has been completed Solid Waste • According to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, solid waste can be generated by manufacturing processes such as: Electric power generation Use of agricultural chemicals and inorganic chemicals Iron and steel manufacturing Water treatment Plastics and resins manufacturing Many of the other manufacturing processes outlined above Solid waste generation in Pakistan ranges between 0.283 to 0.612 kg/capita/day and the waste generation growth rate is 2.4% per year Industrial Effluents • Industrial effluents are discharges from various industries, and various organic pollutants have been found in different water resources
• They belong to various classes such as pesticides,
fertilizers, hydrocarbons, phenols, plasticizers, biphenyls, detergents, oils, greases, pharmaceuticals, etc.
• It poses a danger to water quality when
discharged into rivers and lakes Waste Treatment • The process of waste management involves treating solid and liquid waste
• During the treatment, it also offers a variety of
solutions for recycling items that aren’t categorized as trash
• The entire idea thus boils down to re-using
garbage as a valuable resource and given our current environmental climate, this process is extremely vital for all households and businesses Waste Treatment Plants Noise Pollution • Unwanted or excessive sound that can have deleterious effects on human health, wildlife, and environmental quality Effect of Excessive Noise on Human Health • Unwanted sounds can have a range of mental health effects
• The brain is always monitoring sounds for signs of
danger, even during sleep
• As a result, frequent or loud noise can trigger anxiety
or stress. With continued exposure to noise pollution, a person’s sensitivity to stress increases
• People living with noise pollution may feel irritable,
on edge, frustrated, or angry Remedial Measures
• Control at Receiver’s End
• Suppression of Noise at Source • Acoustic Zoning • Sound Insulation at Construction Stages • Planting of Trees • Legislative Measures Remedial Measures DISCUSSION
