BASES

A substance capable of reacting with an acid to

form a salt and water, or (more broadly) of
accepting or neutralizing hydrogen ions is known
as base.

Physical Properties of bases:-

1) They are soapy in touch.
2) They have a bitter test.
3) They turn red litmus paper into blue.
4) They turn turmeric paper brown.
5) They turn methyl orange yellow and
phenolphthalein pink.
6) They normally do not react with metals. Only
some metals like zinc, aluminum and tin react to
give hydrogen.
7) React with acids to give salt and water.
SALTS

In the language of chemistry “Any

chemical compound formed from the
reaction of an acid with a base, with all or
part of the hydrogen of the acid replaced by
a metal” is known as salt.

Properties of salts:-
1) Some salts are salty in taste, but most of the salts are
bitter in taste.
2) Salts normally do not cause any change in the color of
indicators like litmus paper, methyl orange, and
phenolphthalein.
3) Some salts are white while some salts are colored.
4) Most of them are soluble in water.
INDICATOR

An indicator is a substance that changes color at a specific

pH value or in the presence of a particular substance, and can
be used to monitor acidity, alkalinity, or the progress of a
reaction.
There are two types of indictors:-
i) Natural Indicators
ii) Artificial/chemical Indicators
