As a function
Find the first 3 terms of the sequence
described by the equation
Let n = { 1, 2, 3}
1. an = 4n +2
If n = 1 If n = 2 If n = 3
an = 4n +2 an = 4n +2 an = 4n +2
a1 = 4(1) +2 a2 = 4(2) +2 a3 = 4(3) +2
a1 = 4 +2 a2 = 8 +2 a3 = 12 +2
a1 = 6 a2 = 10 a3 = 14
Therefore the first 3 terms of the sequence are 6, 10, 14
Find the first 5 terms of the sequence described by the
equation
Let n = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
2. an = 3n - 1

If n = If n = 2 If n = 3 If n = 4 If n = 5
1 an = 3 n - 1
an = 3n - 1 a3 = 3n - 1 a4 = 3n - 1 a5 = 3 n - 1
a1 = 3(1) - 1 a2 = 3(2) - 1 a3 = 3(3) - 1 a4 = 3(4) - 1 a5 = 3(5) - 1
a1 = 3 – 1 a2 = 9 – 1 a3 = 27 – 1 a4 = 81 – 1 a5 = 243 – 1
a1 = 2 a2 = 8 a3 = 26 a4 = 80 a5 = 242

Therefore the first 5 terms of the sequence are 2, 8, 26, 80, 242

Sequence as a Function
Since we define sequence as a
function whose domain is a set of
positive integers, then, it is possible
for us to represent this in terms of a
function or equation.
Sequence as a Function

Determining the general rule
(an) of a given sequence.
The most difficult part of this lesson
is to determine the general rule
described by the given sequence.
Meaning, from the given list of terms
we have to derive the equation or the
function. We can do this by analogy or
simply by inspection.
Example:
Determine the general rule (an) described
by the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …
a1 = 1 By Inspection: Observe the

a2 = 2 subscript of a and the value at the

right side of the equation.
a3 = 3
a4 = 4
‘ Therefore: an = n

an= ?
Example:
Determine the general rule (an) described
by the sequence 4, 7, 10, 13, …
hence,
By observation, the next term of
the sequence is obtained by
a1 = 4 a1 = 4 = 4 + (0)(3)
adding 3 to the preceding term. a2 = 7 a2 = 4 +3
a3 = 4 + 3+3
= 4 + (1)(3)
= 4 + (2)(3)
Express each term in terms of 4. a3 = 10 a4 = 4 + 3+3 +3 = 4 + (3)(3)

a4 = 13 Observe the subscripts and the

multipliers of 3. (it is decreased by 1)

‘ Therefore: an = 4 + (n-1)(3)
‘ When simplified:

an= ? an = 4 + (3n-3)
an = 3n +1
Determine the general rule (an)described
Example:
by the sequence

a1 =
a2 =
a3 = Observe the subscripts and the and the
numerators. (They are equal)
a4 = Now, observe the subscripts and the
denominators (it is increased by 1)

an= Therefore: an =
Example:
Determine the general rule (an) described
by the sequence 2, 6, 18, 54, …
hence,
By observation, the next term of
the sequence is obtained by
a1 = 2 a1 = 2 = 2 (3)0
multiplying 3 to the preceding
term.
a2 = 6 a2 = 2 (3) = 2 (3)1
a3 = 2(3)(3) = 2 (3)2
a3 = 18 a4 = 2(3)(3)(3) = 2 (3)4
Express each term in terms of 2.
a4 = 54 Observe the subscripts and the
exponents of 3. (it is decreased by 1)

‘ Therefore: an = 2(3)n
