2000
WHAT IS R.A 9003?
Republic Act 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000, is a Philippine law that aims to promote
and implement sustainable waste management practices throughout
the country. It was enacted on January 26, 2001, to address the
growing environmental and health concerns caused by improper
waste disposal.

Waste Segregation:
The law requires the segregation of waste at
the source into three categories: biodegradable,
non-biodegradable, and special waste.
This ensures that different types of waste are
properly managed and processed for recycling,
composting, or disposal.

Public Awareness and Education:
The law emphasizes the importance of
public awareness and education
campaigns to promote responsible waste
management practices among
individuals, communities, and
institutions. It aims to instill a sense of
environmental stewardship and
responsibility.

RA 9003 establishes mechanisms for
monitoring and reporting compliance
with the law's provisions. It mandates the
creation of monitoring teams and the
submission of regular reports to ensure

Personnel and students of GSDMSFI must follow the regulating
policies and procedures on waste management primarily on
segregation, reuse, recycling, and composting.

Biodegradable waste
includes leaves, fruits, and their skin,
flowers, eggshell, animal manure and/or
feathers, left-over foods, sawdust, coconut
husk, cigarette butts, tissue paper, and/or
paper napkins.

Recyclable waste
includes cartoons, paper, plastic bottles
and/or galloons, broken glasses,
aluminum cans, bronze, scrap irons,
tetra pack, and mono-block chairs.

Residual waste/
Non-Biodegradable waste
includes shampoo and/or sachets and/or
bottles, candy and other wrappers,
cellophane, disposable shaves, ballpens,
broken ceramics, cloth, disposable diapers,

Special or medical waste
includes used PPEs, gloves, head caps,
contaminated swabs, cotton balls, and
bandages. Sharp-proof containers shall
be available for needles, syringes, and
other sharp.
