The Impact Of single-use plastics on environment and argue for or against the implementation
of a nationwide ban on single use of plastics

Title/Topic: Implementation of A Nationwide Ban on Single Use of Plastics

I. Introduction
Plastic pollution is a pressing issue that demands our attention within the complex
geographical fabric of the Philippines. Comparable to a strategy plan, this position paper
methodically argues in favor of enacting a national plastics ban.
The negative effects of single use plastics serve as a reminder of our shared responsibilities in a
generation defined by both environmental concerns and technological advancements. In an
effort to provide light on the intricate relationships between ecological sustainability and human
behavior, this position paper aims to address the effects of excessive plastic usage on our
planet. We examine the necessity of the implementation of a nationwide ban of single use
plastic with the ultimate objective of fostering a healthier environment for coming generations.
The main purpose of this position paper is to achieve a balance between environmental
protection and sustainable national growth. This study, which is set against the backdrop of our
abundant biodiversity and ecological, argues for radical steps to protect our natural legacy by
implementing a strict ban on single-use plastics.
As we navigate the complexities of this plastic pollution, the need to address this issue urgently
is highlighted by our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship as well as the
necessity to conserve ecosystems. With this paper, we hope to start a conversation that will
move the Philippines closer to a future in which environmental resilience is maintained and the
commitment to sustainable development is unwavering.

II. Counter Argument

In the Philippines, those opposed to a nationwide ban on single-use plastics put up a

number of issues. They express concern about job losses in industries on the
companies or factories of plastic and draw attention to potential detrimental effects on
the economy and jobs. Furthermore, they highlight how useful plastic is for routine tasks
like takeaway and packaging and imply that a ban would cause difficulty to some.

Furthermore, opponents contend that it could be difficult to enforce the ban and instead
recommend concentrating on improving recycling programs and public awareness
campaigns. Instead of imposing a sudden ban, some suggest a gradual transition away
from plastic to give people and companies time to adjust without suffering major
setbacks.

opponents suggest exploring new technologies and advancements in recycling methods

as viable alternatives to a complete ban. This perspective underscores the importance
of considering the economic and practical aspects alongside environmental concerns in
the ongoing discourse about plastic usage in the Philippines.

A. Counterclaim against the proposed nation ban on single-use plastics highlights

potential job losses and interruptions to companies that depend on the production of
plastics, as well as concerns about the ban's economic effects. Furthermore,
emphasis is focused on how simple it is to use plastics in everyday life, how difficult
it is for customers to switch, and how difficult it is to enforce wide restrictions. In
order to mitigate the environmental concerns associated with single-use plastics, the
case emphasizes the importance of continual technical advancement in addition to a
gradual transition that permits firms and consumers to adjust.

While concerns exist about a nationwide ban on single-use plastics in the Philippines,
the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Economic impacts can be mitigated through a
planned transition, creating new job opportunities. Convenience is a consideration, but
the environmental and health benefits are more significant. Enforcement challenges can
be addressed with improved regulations and waste management. Immediate action is
crucial to combat plastic pollution, making a gradual transition less effective. While new
technologies are important, a ban remains a necessary step toward a cleaner and
healthier future for the Philippines.

III. Argument

Argument #1:
Single-use plastics, when discarded, contribute to marine pollution and the formation
of microplastics in water. As these plastics degrade, they fragment into microscopic particles,
infiltrating aquatic ecosystems. This poses a direct risk to marine life, as microplastics can be
ingested by various organisms, disrupting the delicate balance of the food chain. Moreover, the
hydrophobic properties of plastics attract and accumulate harmful pollutants, creating toxic
hotspots in our oceans. Enforcing a nationwide ban on single-use plastics becomes imperative
in mitigating these ecological challenges, safeguarding marine biodiversity, and fostering a
healthier aquatic environment.
A. According to the research the single-use plastics (SUPs), encompassing items such as
plastic bags, microbeads, cutlery, straws, and polystyrene, serve as significant
contributors to marine pollution.
B. A team of researchers in MSU-IIT has found the prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the
gastrointestinal tracts of adult milkfish (“bangus”), one of the predominant species
developed in the country’s aquaculture industry.
C. Plastics have been reported as a problem in the marine environment since the 1970s
(Carpenter and Smith, 1972, Colton et al., 1974). However, only recently has the issue of
plastic pollution in marine and freshwater environments been identified as a global
problem (Andrady, 2011, Eriksen et al., 2013, Vegter et al., 2014, Eerkes-Medrano et al.,
2015, Perkins, 2015).

Argument #2:
In the Philippines, the implementation of a nationwide ban on single use plastics (SUP)
is essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for public health. there are so many
factors that Single use plastic can be harmful to human body for example when dangerous
chemicals seep into food and water supplies, disposable plastics become a health hazard to
people. Reducing the usage of single-use plastics puts community health and safety first,
making living conditions better for everybody. This argument, which emphasizes health,
supports the many advantages of a complete ban on single-use plastics in the Philippines.

A. According to the study Microplastics are a pollutant of environmental concern. Their

presence in food destined for human consumption and in air samples has been reported.

Thus, microplastic exposure via diet or inhalation could occur, the human health effects
of which are unknown.
B. The ubiquitous use of plastics and daily exposure have facilitated continuous contact of
plastic and its ingredients to human body and studies have suggested the presence of
these ingredients in the human body which has reflected the constant exposure as well
as its metabolism and excretion of some harmful product of plastics.
