III. Procedure

A. Preparation
• Prayer
 Greetings and Checking of Attendance
 Motivation
The teacher prepares strips of red, green, yellow and colored paper.
Each paper strip has an incomplete sentence. Students will have to
supply the correct modal in the sentence.

Mechanics:
The paper strips are inside the box and it will be passed by the students while the
teacher is playing music. The music will stop and the student who got the box will
have to choose a paper strip.
Red Strip: The student will (STOP) – meaning he/she will not answer. The student is
saved and he/ she can choose a classmate to answer the incomplete sentence.

Green Strip: The student will (GO) – meaning he/she will answer. The student will
answer the incomplete sentence.
Yellow Strip: The student should be (READY) – meaning he/she should answer the
incomplete sentence. Plus, the student must be ready to give an example sentence
using modal.

 B. Presentation

This day we are going to talk about modals such as could, should, can, will, and may
but first let’s look at the sentences at the board on what will happen in the future if
people continue to ignore their doings.

1. There could be long periods of low rainfall in the particular region.

2. Over the several decades, sea level will probably rise 10-20 centimeters (4 to 8
inches).
3. This may not sound like much, but it may cause extensive damage.
4. It will bring the increase in the chances of catastrophic floods like the one
experienced by New Orleans in 2005.
5. Over the next several centuries, sea level may rise 5 or more meters (16 or
more feet)
6. Could you imagine how the shorelines of the continent will change?
7. Many of today’s major coastal cities might be underwater.

 C. Discussion

Modal Verbs are auxiliary or helping verbs which

modify or change the meaning of the main verbs. You use
modal verbs in giving advice or suggestions, in making
requests, or in giving predictions and prohibitions. To
show more of the other uses of modal verbs, here is a list
with sample sentences:

D. Application

The students will be divided into 3 groups.

Materials: Power point presentation, speaker, pen and paper

Procedure: The student will view the music video entitled “ShouldaWouldaCoulda” by Beverly
Knight.

After watching the music video, each group will write the sentences that has a modal verb and they
are going to use the information from the song to explain what they have understand. After that,
students will construct their own sentences which include the modals present in the song.
