SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS – THE

IMPORTANCE OF FAIR TESTING

Lesson 1 – Consolidation Camp
SCIENCE 7
Short Overview
Pass the Cabbage
1. The students will pass the cabbage ball containing question
from the lesson.
2. When the music stops, the student who last touch the cabbage
ball will unwrap the ball and answer the question written on it.
Question 1:
Can you name one of the important components/parts of a
scientific investigation?

Aim Method

Results Conclusion
Question 2: You have to change something,
measure something
What are some
of the things You have to keep everything
you can do to else the same

make sure your You have to measure

experiment is a everything accurately
fair test?
You have to measure things
three times
Question 3:
: Why is fair test important in doing experiments?

Experiments in Science have to be fair

tests otherwise the results might not be
valid.
Lesson Purpose and Intention
Lesson Purpose and Intention

 Describing and writing the

components of a scientific
investigation.

 How important this is for learning and

when answering questions in science.
Lesson Language Practice
Guess the Word
1. The students will guess the word by filling in the blanks with
the correct letters of the word.
2. Ask the students to say something that describes the given
word.

AIM
Lesson Activity
Snowball Discussion
1. The students will read the text by pair.
2. After each person has had a chance to share their ideas and discuss
words that are not familiar, the pair joins another pair, creating a
group of four.
3. Pairs share their ideas with the pair they just joined.
4. Next, groups of four join together to form groups of eight, and so
on, until the whole class is joined in one large discussion.
Fair Testing
Gabriel wanted to find out why the balloons that he
tied up in the backyard/garden/outside started to get
bigger and then burst when it got very hot.
“I think the balloons are getting bigger when the
temperature is getting higher.”
He said to himself. “I wonder what experiment I could
do to find out the answer and make sure it’s a fair test”?
Question 1:

What should Gabriel use to

measure the air
temperatures?
What should Gabriel use to measure the
air temperatures?

Laboratory
Thermometer
Question 2:

How should he determine

the precise size of the
balloon?
How should he determine the precise size
of the balloon?
measure the diameter of
the balloon using a tape
measure for
three times.
Question 3:

What should Gabriel need to

consider to make sure that his
experiment is a fair test?
What should Gabriel need to consider to make sure
that his experiment is a fair test?

 The balloons must be of the same type and size from

the beginning/ or from the start.
 Use the same measuring device and scale in
measuring the diameter of the balloons.
 Use the same thermometer to measure the
temperature each time.
 Perform the experiment at the same time of the day
to ensure same weather condition.
Question 4:

How should Gabriel write

down all his measurements?
How should Gabriel write down all his
measurements?

Tabular presentation
Question 5:

What is Gabriel’s aim for

the experiment?
What is Gabriel’s aim for the
experiment?

to prove that helium

balloons expand and even
burst when the to design an experiment
temperature rises which is
a fair test
Question 6:
If Gabriel’s experiment
works out how he thought it
would, what should he write
as his conclusion?
If Gabriel’s experiment works out how he
thought it would, what should he write as his
conclusion?
the results showed that as the
temperature increased by x
degrees, the size of the balloons
increased till they burst.
Lesson Conclusion
Off the Wall
1. Let the students write their answers to the questions on
metacards.
2. Ask them to post their metacards on the wall in the classroom
or on a tree.
3. Call volunteers to share their answers to the class.
Question 1:
Has this lesson helped you
to better understand what
fair testing means in
Science? If so, how?
Question 2:
Has this lesson helped you to
remember the components of
a scientific investigation? If
so, how?
