SIGNALS
MELCS:
use opinion-marking signals
to share ideas.
Read each statement. write FACT if you
can prove or disprove the statement with
concrete evidence, or OPINION if the
statement is a belief or a position. Take
note that some statements are technically
opinions, but are based on such widely
accepted views of few people.
1. Eid is a religious festival
celebrated by Muslims twice a
year.
2. Chinese New Year is also
known as Spring Festival.
3. Personally, I think upholding our
cultural practices through fiestas should
be preserved for future generations.

4. Although widely celebrated, some find


festivities impractical and expensive.
5. In the Philippines, celebrating fiestas is
still common.

thinks, or takes a stand about
something. They are
influenced by a person’s
experiences, background
knowledge, emotions, and
preferences.
Opinion-marking
Signals.
They are used as signal
words that will help express
and identify opinions. They
are usually written in the
beginning part of a sentence.
Below are some other examples of opinion-marking signals.
a. I feel happy about being a Filipino.
b. It seems that Filipinos have strong family ties.
c. From what I know, Filipinos are popular for being
hospitable.
d. Personally, I think that Filipinos give importance to
education.
e. Maybe Filipinos are resilient because they find ways to
survive.
f. In my experience, Filipino families go to church and pray
together.
g. I hope Filipino children will continue to respect their elders
by saying “po” and “opo”.
h. It is a belief of the Filipinos that when you respect others,
they will respect you as well.
