DISASTER READINESS RISK

AND REDUCTION
WHAT’S UP WITH
PHILIPPINES, WHAT’S
THE NEED FOR YOU
TO LEARN THE
SUBJECT?
DISASTER READINESS RISK AND REDUCTION

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Explain what a hazard is;

• Define the two main categories (Natural and

Man-made) of hazards; and

• Identify the impact of hazards common in the

environment
DISASTER READINESS RISK AND REDUCTION

NATURAL PROCESSES:
• Plate tectonics- leading to mountain building,
volcanism, ocean formation etc.
• Atmospheric processes- formation of clouds,
precipitation
• Biological accumulation-increasingly large number of
fish contaminated by mercury
• Human activities- urbanization, extracting sources,
geoengineering etc.
TYPHOON _ _ _ _ _?
“Philippines is one of the most
hazardous countries in the world,
having more than 20 tropical
cyclones in a year, earthquake
everyday, and more than 20
active volcanoes found all over
the country”
WHAT IS A HAZARD?

community or a society involving widespread human,
material, economic, or environmental losses and
